And speaking of the boat shows...

Recycling Continues. We definitely started something.

In the fall of 2013 we brought recycling to the boat shows in Annapolis at no cost to the shows thanks to grants from the BoatUS Foundation and BGE. Our brightly colored bins were everywhere within the shows and the effort was very enthusiastically received by exhibitors and the public alike. In subsequent shows, the boat show management team deployed its own recycle and trash bins.

Annapolis Green has been a loud voice for appropriate waste and recycling strategies at special events. We are pleased that what we started continues.

Shuttle to the Boat Show

Our Founding One Hundred sponsor,
Mid-Atlantic GEM, LLC, and the Maryland Avenue Transit Authority (MATA) will run shuttles to the show. Mid-Atlantic GEM will run between Weems & Plath in Eastport (Don't miss its Tent Sale) and Tim McClennen of MATA will run between Dock Street and Maryland Avenue.

While you're at the show, be sure to "Boat Show Responsibly" -- use the recycling bins!

Join Us for a Green Drinks EXTRA
The "You've Got Power" Event at the Sailboat Show!
Tent O - Enter at the Yacht Basin Entrance
between the hotel & the yacht club on Compromise Street
Thursday, Oct 8
6:30 - 9 p.m.

Annapolis Green is joining Orca Green Marine in its "You've Got Power" Pavilion at the Sailboat Show this week. We'll be there throughout the show as the local environmental voice, along with  Electric Yachts, Solar City, and the Maryland Climate Coalition to introduce a new regional initiative known as "Silicon Bays" - think Silicon Valley but with technology companies in the Chesapeake Bay watershed.

Orca Green Marine and partners will show sailors that they no longer have to live in a "miserly" way with regard to energy because powering their boats off the grid is completely feasible. Sailors can now live very comfortably without using electricity derived from fossil fuels.

Join us during the run of the show and TONIGHT when Jimi Davies (aka Jimi Haha) and the Shawn Owen Band will provide live music -- off grid, of course! Jimi will begin at 6:45 p.m., and the Shawn Owens band follow will follow. | Read about Jimi in The Capital

We will have beverages and light snacks. And why not buy an LED-lighted glass for your beverages? Just $10 at the event while supplies last.

Admission is free, but a $10 donation to Annapolis Green at the door will be most welcome.

Space is limited.

How much plastic is in the Chesapeake Bay?
What does it mean for the Bay's health & ours?

Tuesday, Oct. 13
7 p.m.
Annapolis Maritime Museum

Join Trash Free Maryland and Annapolis Green for a presentation on plastic pollution in our local waters.

The recent 15-day Chesapeake Bay Trash Trawl found plastic in all 60 samples collected throughout the Maryland portion of the Bay.

Find out what this means for public health, the health of the Bay, and what can you do about this toxic pollution that has already entered the world food chain.

Speakers:
  • Julie Lawson, Trash Free Maryland
  • Maryland Delegate Dr. Clarence Lam,  (D-12)
  • Stiv Wilson, The Story of Stuff Project
  • A long-distance ocean sailor
The issue of plastic marine debris was so shocking to sailors during the last Volvo Ocean Race that a three-hour summit on the issue was held during the Newport stopover this summer. But the plastic you can't see - from microbeads to photo-degraded plankton-size particles is even more dangerous as marine life mistakes it for food.

Learn more about how plastics move from littering our streets to contaminating the fish on our dinner plates.

Free admission, but donations to Annapolis Green and Trash Free Maryland are most appreciated.

Our Responsible Events & Festivals (Green REF) program is going strong. We' brought recycling and composting to several events in September and we're off and running in October.

On Oct. 24 & 25, the Annapolis Yacht Club will host the US Optimist Dinghy Association's Atlantic Coast Championship. Race organizers are working hard to make the a Gold Level Sailors for the Sea certified regatta. This is something we are especially excited about because the racers in OSODA are kids! There's nobody better to carry the environmental responsibility message than kids.

We are looking for a Greening Sponsor for this prestigious regatta. How about your company?

And look for a

REF event coming soon!

Our Greening Sponsors have seen the value of associating their brands with our Green REF program. How about you? For more information,
