It Took a Village to Make Green Drinks
in the Design District a Big Success!

We owe a big thanks to many people for a very successful... and happily different... Green Drinks. On Tuesday, July 14, we enjoyed an eclectic evening at the Annapolis Design District.

First, we appreciate the hospitality of host Gallery 3976! All of the talented shop owners were open and telling Green Drinkers all about their art work, and selling too! And we'd like to extend a special thank you to Suzi Jett of Annapolis Brand who first approached us with the idea of hosting Green Drinks at 3976. It was a great idea!

Our co-hosts were the Oyster Recovery Partnership (ORP) and Capital Teas. The entire ORP team was with us, including Shelly the oyster!

The Annapolis Design District was a new area for us -- and one that is home to many creative businesses and non-profits including our hosts. Check it our online.

spa creek conservancyOne thing we really enjoyed doing was bringing to the attention of Green Drinkers that the Design District is in the headwaters of Spa Creek. The more we can do with stormwater-savvy beautification the better for the Creek and the better for property values! We will be working on this in the months to come with Design

keep annapolis beautiful

District leaders and the Spa Creek Conservancy. Beautification and landscaping increase property values and attract customers. Beautification is a core component of Annapolis Green's "Keep Annapolis Beautiful" initiative as an affiliate of Keep America Beautiful.

And speaking of beautification, we owe Brad Kuklinski of Greenstreet Growers a big thanks for dressing up a bike with greenery at the entrance of Green Drinks as an example of store-by-store beautification. We set this up to bring attention to the Design District's Upcycle Planters Competition to kick off beautification of the District with "fun, funky and noteworthy" planters in front of area businesses. Judging will be held the week of September 14 and will be announced at the Art in Action event on September 26, 11 a.m. - 4 p.m., on Edgewood Street.

Capital Teas provided a very interesting twist with its complimentary samples of its refreshing Vino Teano wine mixers. Tea in wine? Yes! Tea in Beer? Yes! And read about Capital Tea's new downtown store, Sugar Daddy Spicy Mama. A big thank you to Adam Levin-Epstein for showcasing Capital Teas at our event. Also, we'll be at Capital Tea's 77 Main Street store for Green Drinks in November. Photo by Ken Tom.

The Oyster Recovery Partnership folks were at Green Drinks in full force with a terrific display all about the wonderful job that organization does to bring back the oyster population in the Bay. Even "Shelly" the oyster showed up! Thank you to Paul Schurick, Bryan Gomes, and all the other enthusiastic ORP staff.

And here's a big thanks to award-winning singer-songwriter-guitarist Dirk Schwenk who set the mood with his beautiful music. Check him out online! Dirk plays music in the evening but his day job is as an attorney specializing in real estate, waterfront, planning and zoning, and maritime law. Check out Bay Law, LLC.

Our Event Sponsor was Flying Dog Brewery and we want thank that company for donating the beer for the evening and thanks to Brian Shorten for telling us about Flying Dog's big commitment to the Chesapeake Bay and a special relationship with the Oyster Recovery Partnership. We  featured Pearl Necklace Oyster Stout and Dead Rise Old Bay Summer Ale. | Read more on our website.

We were also happy to bring Pinkey's West Street Liquors into Green Drinks. Owner Paul Malley took important steps at his small business to treat stormwater, including permeable pavement and a stormwater planters, to protect Spa Creek. And he really knows his wines as was evident as he poured at the wine table he staffed for us. Thanks so a nice price break from Paul, we were able to offer wine on a complimentary basis. Thank you, Paul!

And, in a new twist for us, we invited John Talman to bring CrabTown Curbs Cuisine -- the turquoise food truck -- to Green Drinks to offer tasty food and soft drinks for purchase.

And finally, we cannot put on Green Drinks without volunteers. Thank you so much to Sandy Williamson, Cathie Trogden and Rita Calvert for staffing our reception tables. You are our rock stars!

Adding to the fun, one of the Gallery shop owners, photographer Steve Seamans, had a photo booth going. Among those enjoying the fun were Carol and Cory Bonney. You just never know what's going to happen at Green Drinks!

We'll have more photos posted on our website soon.

We're going to take a break from Green Drinks in August, but we will hold a very important presentation about the growing threat of plastic in the oceans and in the Bay on August 18. Stay tuned for details.

Responsible Events & Festivals, our festival greening program (The Green REF), is getting to be well-known and prized by planners of regattas, foot races, rowing races, and more, as they ask us to help Green their events. Our program is based on sponsorship.

Homestead Gardens donated a moveable "home" for our eco-stations!
We look for companies - in any sort of business - that would like to Make the Right Call and connect their brands to our recycling and composting educational efforts.

Watch for upcoming REF events. Would YOU like to be a Green REF sponsor?

We are working with the Annapolis Rotary to make the 70th Annual Crab Feast a "Bay Responsible," Zero-Waste event through our Responsible Events & Festivals Program (The Green REF... Make the Right Call).

About the Crab Feast: Close to 2500 feasters are expected to enjoy the bounty of the summer at the Navy Marine Corps Memorial Stadium from 5 - 8 p.m. on Friday, August 7.

We will be there making sure that recyclables go into our blue Keep America Beautiful bins and that compostables go into Veteran Compost's totes. This year ALL waste/trash will fit into one of these categories so NOTHING will go to the landfill!

We enlisted the help of Leonard Paper of Baltimore to provide all compostable tableware.Within two months all that food waste will become wonderful compost for local gardens.

What will be composted?

Crab shells, corn cobs, watermelon rinds, hotdog leftovers, soup cups, crab trays, BBQ plates, soup spoons, crab knives, paper towels, brown paper on the tables and even the mallets!

What will be recycled?

Beer cups, beverage cans and bottles.

About the summer's bounty

Sadly, the crab catch in the Chesapeake is not big enough to provide all the crabs needed for this event at a reasonable price. So most of the crabs - all #1 males will come from other states. But they will be steamed by Shoreline Seafood of Gambrills in the traditional Chesapeake way, "Hot and Old Bay Seasoned."

The corn is all from the Eastern Shore as are the watermelons.

Here's the menu - all you can eat and drink

  • Steamed male crabs
  • Maryland vegetable crab soup
  • Sweet Maryland corn on the cob
  • Beef barbecue sandwiches
  • All-American hot dogs
    Draft beer
    Soft drinks
  • Bake sale sweet goodies and a cake raffle
  • Watermelon slices from the Mar-Del Watermelon Association

We ask that feasters take only what they can eat as this event is Bay Responsible.

Feasters in the Preferred Dining area will also enjoy Maryland wines from

  • Great Frogs Winery, Annapolis
  • Knob Hall Winery, Clear Spring
  • Fort Leonard Winery, Leonardtown
  • Linganore Winecellars, Mt. Airy (a Maryland Green Travel Partner)

Help Us with Greening

Volunteer - Although the Rotarians do a great a great job of running this huge event, Annapolis Green needs help getting the message out to the feasters. We need smiling folks standing by our bins making sure folks put their waste in the right bins and even explaining why. We also need folks to greet feasters as they wait in line to get in - again with our message - and to staff our information table. You'll have a great time and yes, you too, will savor the summer's bounty! Let us know right away if you'd like to help. bay@annapolisgreen.com

Be a bushel sponsor - Buy a bushel

The goal of the annual Rotary Crab Feast is to raise funds for local non-profit organizations. All proceeds go to these worthy causes. The biggest expenditure for the Crab Feast is the crabs themselves. Each bushel costs approximately $200 and Rotary orders more than 340 bushels. So, to maximize the amount that can go to charity, Rotary has announced a new sponsorship campaign: Bushel Sponsor!

The sponsorship cost is $200 per bushel and there are benefits associated with the sponsorship including tickets to the Crab Feast. Read more: http://www.annapolisrotary.org/crab-feast-sponsorship

The event will be held rain or shine as the seating is under cover.
