Annapolis' First Green and Clean Regatta

Green Drinks last Thursday at Eastport Yacht Club was amazing. We had a terrific crowd, wonderful hosts, perfect setting, engaging speakers and folks who were very enthusiastic about stewardship of the environment. It was very refreshing! There were lots of new faces... and lots of EYCers too at this celebration of the Greening of the J/80 World Championship and EYC in general.
Read about EYC's env
ironmental stewardship practices. The evening began with a very engaging talk by sailor, explorer and environmentalist Matt Rutherford who regaled everyone with his stories of sailing the Atlantic and Pacific doing scientific research on ocean pollution. We presented Matt with an award for his work in this regard and will continue to follow his adventures.
Eastport Yacht Club was presented a certification as a "Gold Level Clean Regatta" for the J/80s by Sailors for the Sea during our event. We'll take credit for being a part of that success, along with WasteStrategies and Veteran Compost.
We want to share this with you because it gives an idea of the power inherent in capturing and measuring Green efforts. Click here for a full report of all of EYC's Green operations during the regatta and during everyday operations. Here are some highlights.
Water Bottles - Single-use, throwaway bottles were replaced with reusable bottles, keeping an estimated3600 plastic water bottles out of the landfill.
Recycling and Composting - Because of us and our Greening sponsors, Chesapeake Bay Roasting Company. Dream Yacht Charter and Blue Bag Organics, over 70% of the club's trash was recycled and 660 lbs. of food waste was composted. Commodore Scott Miller confirmed on Living Green in Annapolis that the club will continue recycling and composting from this point forward. | Listen to the interview
Paper Reduction - Everything having to do with the regatta, from Notice of Race to boat measurement to data entry and results was provided on electronic tablets resulting in a saving of 15 reams of paper.
Recycled Trophies - All the regatta trophies are made of recycled glass, manufactured by a company Annapolis Green recommended. Ah yes, another connection!
Alternative Fuels - All deep fryer oil used at EYC is converted into bio-diesel. LEHR Environmentally Friendly Technology marine engines that burn propane were on display at the race village thanks to Greening sponsor Scandia Marine. Green Drinks event sponsor Mercedes Benz of Annapolis' new B-Class and Smart electric drive cars were displayed at the village entrance to provide info on the benefits of driving electric. Green Drinks sponsor companies RER Energy, Solar Energy World, and Hyde Concrete provided educational materials on energy from the sun, and the benefits of porous concrete - like that installed in EYC's parking lot.
We facilitated a lot of connections including Matt Rutherford with Julie Lawson of Trash Free Maryland Alliance, Keep America Beautiful folks with Sailors for the Sea and the BoatUS Foundation, and more. Talk about magic!

By the way, you can hear recent interviews with Matt Rutherford and EYC Commodore Scott Miller on Living Green in Annapolis on WNAV.

A big thank you to Mercedes Benz of Annapolis for sponsoring this edition of Green Drinks! We're excited to partner with our local dealership, and want you to know that they have two eco-friendly, all-electric drive models: the brand
new B-Class and the Smart electric drive. Both cars were displayed at Green Drinks! Thank you to James Shellum for bringing the cars and talking to all the Green Drinkers.

A success! Now, a bit of a rest during the Boat Shows - and that's a change for us from the past two years.
The next Green Drinks will be held at Great Frogs Winery on Thursday, November 6. Stay tuned for details and save the date!
