Join us TONIGHT, July 31 for a fun night at the Navy Marine Corps Memorial Stadium when the Bayhawks play the Denver Outlaws during Go Green Night!

The spirit at the games is infectious ...come experience the excitement right in your backyard!

Not only have the Bayhawks  given us a unique promo code for a discount on tickets but they are also working with Annapolis Green's Responsible Events & Festivals (REF... Make the Right Call) program and the Stadium to increase recycling efforts -- and for this night, also composting!

Go Green Night  starts at 7:30 p.m. We encourage you to wear green (or a team jersey, of course)! Get the promo code on our website.

REF During the game the team will stress the importance of being kind to the environment and part of the ticket sales will benefit Annapolis Green! You'll see our eco-stations at the stadium too -- deployed to help fans recycle and ready for the Annapolis Rotary Crab Feast the next day. Read more below.

maryland sports kristi neidhardt Thank you to Maryland Sports and Realtor Kristi Neidhardt... Your Eco-Agent, for sponsoring the REF program at this event!

Compost those Crabs Tomorrow!

5-8 p.m., Navy Marine Corps Memorial Stadium

Compost those crabs! Annapolis Green is working with the Rotary Club of Annapolis to make this 69th annual event ZERO-WASTE!

Thank you to local artist Ramon Matheu for use of his Feast Responsibly (TM) artwork. You can reach him at  baypopshop.com.

REF

This is one of our Responsible Events and Festivals (REF... Make the Right Call.) efforts and we thank Maryland Sports for sponsoring this event!

Our mantra,"Feast Responsibly," means that we're working toward a goal of seeing everything recycled or composted -- nothing to the landfill.

Nearly 2,500 people are expected to attend and finish off 350 bushels of crabs, 3,400 ears of corn, 100 gallons of crab soup, 1,800 hot dogs, 150 pounds of beef barbeque, and hundreds of gallons of soft drinks and beer. Look for our Eco-Stations!

The crab feast is not only a blast, it also supports Rotary's great work in our community.

WANT TO HELP OUT? We need volunteers to help us and the Rotarians guide folks as they dispose of their leftover food, cups and other materials. Be a Recycling/Composting Ambassador and help folks do the right thing for a few hours tomorrow. Interested? Please contact Lynne right away: 410-703-2697 or [email protected].

Do Good. Have Fun.

We did. We did.

Last Saturday some 70 volunteers showed up at the Ellen O. Moyer Back Creek Nature Park for a big clean-up and refresh organized by Annapolis Green and sponsored by Bud Light with Keep America Beautiful.

In the morning  we assigned them jobs that had been coordinated with the city's Recreation and Parks department. We planted dozens of plants, we scrubbed the features in the park including signs and wooden steps and picnic tables. We picked up litter. We hammered down protruding nails. We cut back overgrown invasive species. We screwed down dangerously loose planks on the pier. And we spread pile after pile of woodchips along the trails.

You've heard of "it takes a village," well, we had that village. People as far away at Waldorf came to volunteer and others from just a few blocks away.

In addition to the main sponsorship from Bud Light, local organizations stepped up to help make it a success, largely at their own expense.

  • Chesapeake Bay Roasting Company provided morning coffee.
  • WRNR radio provided great music to help pump everybody up through the early morning rain.
  • MOM's Organic Market in Bowie provided snacks.
  • Garden Girls provided landscaping advice and purchased the plants for us at a discount.
  • The Spa Creek Conservancy provided tools like shovels and rakes.
  • Annapolis Community Boating provided kayaks for litter patrol from the water side and loads of support.
  • Port Annapolis Marina provided its beautiful and very valuable pavilion space for our after-party.
  • Chesapeake Bayhawks were well represented, volunteering, giving back to the community also.

The generally agreed upon value of a volunteer hour in Maryland is about $25.50. That is the figure used by many philanthropic organizations. Using that number, times three hours, times 70 volunteers, the total value of the volunteer labor donated to the city was $5355. Add to that about $1000 worth of plants.

A lot of people talked about making this an annual event and we just might. Thank you to everybody who worked so hard doing good and later, having fun.
