Come to the MRE Tug of War & Support Annapolis Green
Saturday, Nov. 2 Fun starts at 10 a.m., Tugs at the Crack O'Noon Second Street at Spa Creek in Eastport and Susan Campbell Park in Annapolis

Did you know that Annapolis Green is one of the benefiting charities for the Maritime Republic of Eastport's 16th Annual Tug of War? The big event will be held this Saturday, Nov. 2, with strong teams gathering on Second Street in Eastport and at Susan Campbell Park in Annapolis. This classic rivalry is in its 16th year and the big prize is bragging rights and raising money for good causes... including us!
A brief history: In 1998 Eastport "seceded" from the City of Annapolis because the bridge over Spa Creek was about to be closed for repairs - thus hurting business on the Eastport side - and the Maritime Republic of Eastport (the MRE) was born. Then the "upstarts" from the MRE challenged Annapolis to a Tug of War over the water. The rest is history and over $500,000 has been raised by the event ... all for good local charities.
This year, the MainStreets Annapolis Partnership is heading up the "loyal opposition" on the Annapolis side with the "Taste of the Tug" classy brunch atmosphere and there will be music, food and drink, frivolity, and oh yes, tugging on a big, long rope on both sides. There will be 7-9 heats, or individual tugs. For example, Annapolis Police vs. Firefighters, Annapolis banks vs. Eastport banks, etc.
Annapolis Green will provide recycling, of course, thanks to sponsorship from Dream Yacht Charter (one of our eco-station sponsors at the boat shows) AND K&B True Value (one of our Founding 100 sponsors)!
How can you support the Tug and support Annapolis Green?
1. Be a tugger!
Do you want to do one of the most grueling things you'll ever do by pulling on a rope for anywhere from 30 seconds to three minutes (more or less)? It will cost you just $20 and that will get you a very cool, exclusive Tugger Tee shirt. The Sign-Up button is right on the MRE website. Just click here.
2. Just show up!
Eat, drink, cheer, dance. It's great fun. The event makes money from sponsorships and the sale of food and drink. The tugs are followed by parties with great music - from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Annapolis and from 10 a.m. to sundown on the Eastport side.
The Eastport side will feature a sanctioned chili cookoff and the Annapolis side will feature the VIP Lounge, with tug viewing from the deck of the Harbor Queen.
The actual tugging begins at The Crack O'Noon when the harbor is closed to boat traffic as the rope is extended across the water.
Here's a list of all the benefiting charities: Annapolis Green, Annapolis Maritime Museum, Civil Air Patrol, Eastport Elementary School, MainStreets Annapolis Partnership, Polar Bear Plunge, Save the Coconuts, Seeds 4 Success, and The Bernie House.
General information about the event is at themre.org and information on festivities on the Annapolis side is at the MainStreets Annapolis Partnership website.
Get involved, have fun, and support great local causes!

Red Right Recycle! Hits a Home Run
We hit a home run for the Bay by providing easy, eye-catching recycling opportunities for patrons and exhibitors of the boat shows in Annapolis this month. The eco-stations and promotion of the event were provided to the boat shows AT NO COST.
We are still collecting information on how much was recycled and how much more work there is to do... but we CAN say that we had overwhelming support from the community. Over 57 establishments on Main and West Street, Market Space, Maryland Avenue, and Eastport put our posters in support of the effort in their windows and over 37 exhibitors flew our "we support" burgees at their booths.
With just preliminary figures we can say that almost 10 tons of recyclables were kept out of the landfill and we'll call that a success.
We owe a big debt of gratitude to our grantors, the BoatUS Foundation and BGE, and to our eco-station sponsors, Boatyard Bar & Grill, Dream Yacht Charter, Annapolis Accommodations, Galway Bay Irish Pub, and Loews Annapolis Hotel/WEST Kitchen and Tavern.

Maryland Crossroads 2013 Tour: Clean Energy, Not Cove Point!
There is a plan to build a plant to export liquefied natural gas (LNG) out of Cove Point, on the shores of the Chesapeake Bay in southern Maryland. The plan would radically expand fracking for gas across the Mid-Atlantic region because it would create an easy way to export the gas. That's right - the fuel would be pulled out of this region - potentially Maryland too - with considerable environmental damage, and then exported.
The Chesapeake Climate Action Network will hold a public forum about this, part of its Maryland Crossroads 2013 series, on Tuesday, Nov. 5, from 7:30-9 p.m., at Broadneck High School, 1265 Green Holly Drive, in Annapolis. Read more.
Come hear about this plan. We'll be there too, and we're slated to receive an award from the Chesapeake Climate Action Network at that time.
