Green Drinks in "Eco-Alley" was a big hit
celebrating Red Right Recycle!

fleet reserve annapolis We kicked off our celebration of boating with our boat shows Green Drinks last week

at the Fleet Reserve's upper deck on "Eco-Alley!"

We welcomed boat show exhibitors, local and visiting boaters, local business people, non-profit staff, government officials and our loyal Green Drinkers to celebrate our Red Right Recycle! initiative (see more below), providing recycling to the boat shows to raise public awareness of the importance of "Clean Water and a Healthy Bay."  Learn more about the initiative.

We owe a big thanks to our hosts at the Fleet Reserve Club. Hosting us during the powerboat show was terrific as they opened up the second deck for unbeatable views of the show and all the excitement. The Fleet's volunteer bartenders were friendly, funny, and welcoming. We enjoyed being a part of Fleet's largest yearly fundraising during the shows, serving up the BEST pit beef BBQ and cold drinks  Please patronize them and stop by while you're at the shows!

We had a number of special guests at Green Drinks including the current boat show management as well as all five members of the new management team that will take over the boat shows soon. Representatives from the BoatUS Foundation, whose grant is partially funding our Red Right Recycle! initiative joined us ... and videotaped our event! And, of course we showed off one of our eco-stations next to the bar.

annapolis yacht sales A big thank you also to our sponsoring organization, Annapolis Yacht Sales, for making our event possible (We hope you saw their chesapeake legal alliance Greenline hybrid boats at the show) and to our partnering organization, the Chesapeake Legal Alliance, for helping to spread the word.

Also, thank you to The Fleet, Davis' Pub and Pussers Caribbean Grill for providing appetizers.

davis pub pussers

Davis' has a happy hour Monday-Friday, 3:30 - 6:30 p.m. and their daily food specials can be found on their Facebook page. Pusser's happy hour is Monday-Friday, 4- 7 p.m. Read more.

We'd also like to thank our Green Drinks volunteers, Leslie Trott Gibbons-Neff & Jeff Gibbons-Neff for helping with set-up and breakdown; Meghan Matthews, Mariel Yarborough, and John Murray for greeting our guests.

The re-use and recycling of carpet is another one of our efforts during the shows. At Green Drinks we had a display of recyclable carpet tiles we brought to introduce to boat show exhibitors. Made by the Interface flooring company in Georgia, the carpet product is called Net Effect and is made partially with discarded fishing nets. The production provides a source of income for small fishing villages in the Philippines while cleaning up their beaches and waters of discarded fishing nets that threaten their livelihood and the precious double barrier reef off their shore. Take a look - it's Net Effect ocean blue waves at the BoatUS Bridge out from Pussers.  Read more about the carpeting.

Cheers,

Elvia & Lynne

Red Right Recycle!
For Clean Water & A Healthy Bay

Our Red Right Recycle! campaign for "Clean Water and a Healthy Bay" hit a homerun last weekend with the deployment of our "eco-stations" at the powerboat show. Some 50 landfill/recycle bin pairs were very visible all over the show, from the docks to the tents, to the brokerage show, making recycling easy for boat show patrons and exhibitors and linking it to good stewardship of the Bay. And they'll be a the sailboat show too!

Of course our Red Right Recycle! campaign for Clean Water & A Healthy Bay would not be possible without grant funding  from the BoatUS Foundation for Safe Boating and Clean Water and BGE  and sponsorship from returning local sponsors Annapolis Accommodations, Dream Yacht Charter, and Loews Annapolis Hotel/WEST Kitchen & Tavern, and new sponsors Boatyard Bar & Grill and Galway Irish Pub.

Many powerboat show exhibitors flew small banners - or burgees (left) - demonstrating their support of the effort and many downtown merchants put posters (right) expressing their support in their windows and lobbies. A social media campaign to demonstrate local support for the effort is underway too. We need your support with that! More about that below.

While at the sailboat show, Look for the colorful Red Right Recycle! eco-stations and recycle paper, plastic, glass and metal for clean water and a healthy Chesapeake Bay!

You can link your business' name to Clean Water and a Healthy Bay by supporting Red Right Recycle! Contact us for a poster -- or a burgee, if you will be a Sailboat Show exhibitor. Or put the "We Support" image on your (right) on your website!

We have five local businesses that are supporting our effort in a big way by sponsoring the eco-stations. You'll see their logos prominently displayed on the eco-station lids.

Thank you, Boatyard Bar & Grill, Dream Yacht Charter, Annapolis Accommodations, Galway Bay Irish Pub and Loews Annapolis Hotel/WEST Kitchen & Tavern!

Going to the show? Hop a ride on an eCruiser,
flying  our banner thanks to sponsorship from Chesapeake Eye Care. They have helped us spread the word over the past two weeks about Red Right Recycle! helping us all to truly "See" Green.
The Brick Companies Wins Green Business Award

the brick companies The Annapolis and Anne Arundel County Chamber of Commerce held its business awards banquet last week. We are happy to say that The Brick Companies won the 2013 Green Business Award. A Founding One Hundred sponsor of Annapolis Green, Brick has long been a pioneer in sustainability.

This is criteria by which they were judged to be worthy of the award:

  • This award will be presented to the businesshas done the most through advocacy and leadership to drive action related to environmental sustainability in Anne Arundel County.
  • This award will be given to a business that demonstrates extraordinary performance related to sustainable - environmental practices such as water conservation, wastewater management, the promotion of alternative transportation and trash, energy conservation, on-site renewable energy production, the purchase of renewable energy, and sustainable food production.

Congratulations!
