Top of the Line
Thank you, Green Drinkers, for putting on quite a party for our Maryland Green Registry Leadership Award Winners!

Our June Green Drinks brought many new faces as we hosted the Department of the Environment's Maryland Green Registry Leadership Awards with Secretary Robert Summers. Six companies and organizations were recognized for their sustainability efforts. The Maryland Green Registry is a free way to promote your business or organization, save money and demonstrate your environmental commitment. Collectively, members have saved millions annually through sustainable practices. The Registry is a part of Governor O'Malley's Maryland Smart, Green & Growing initiative. 2013 Leadership Award Winners
Coca Cola Refreshments Goodwill Industries International La Prima Food Group Life Technologies Salisbury University Oakland Nursing & Rehabilitation Center Congratulations to the winners and to the cumulative measurable results reported by all Registry members as a result of their environmental practices over the past year: - 603,000 lbs. of hazardous waste reduced
- 11.8 million lbs. of nonhazardous waste reduced
- 532 million lbs. of non-hazardous waste recycled
- 2.7 million gallons of wastewater reduced
- 446,000 gallons of fuel saved
- 9.8 million vehicle miles traveled reduced
- 441 million kWh electricity saved
- 517 million gallons of water conserved
- 2 million metric tons carbon dioxide equivalent (MTCO2e) reduced
- $74 million saved
Isn't that amazing? And doesn't that demonstrate that Going Green makes sense for the Earth and for the bottom line. We hope this inspires businesses of any size to look at the benefits, join the Registry, and share their stories too. Thank you to our host, the Westin Annapolis. From the chef's beehive on the hotel's roof top to participation in the Global Soap Project, they are raising the Green tourism bar in our community! Read more on our website.
The chef's appetizers were delicious and generous. We were joined by countless members of the hotel staff -- as attendees as well as serving -- including the new General Manager! If you have an event to plan... check out the new Annapolis Ballroom... it's beautiful. The Westin is a member of Maryland Green Travel, a companion program to the Maryland Green Registry.
Our partners at Mills Fine Wine and Spirits, new members of the Maryland Green Registry, provided a lovely display of local wines in recognition of Maryland Wine Week, June 14-24. Not only will Mills offer a full week of tastings of local wines, but it also will offer a 15% discount on all state wines starting tomorrow. And, make sure you let Mills staff know how you found out about this: "I heard about it at Green Drinks!"
Our newest Founding One Hundred sponsor, Chesapeake Bay Roasting Company, provided the sought-after gift packages for all the award winners. CBRC also is a member of the Maryland Green Registry.
And how about that great music? We very much want to thank The Walking Sticks for giving our event a festive feel with their terrific tunes. As we mentioned, the band's founders, Max and Spencer Ernst, are brand-new graduates of the University of Maryland in Environmental Science. They would like some permanent employment in their field. Please consider adding them to your company. About Max and Spencer.
We're looking forward to seeing Tony J Photography's photos of our event. Stay tuned!

There are many events on interest to the environmental community this weekend. Read more below and in the sidebar and celebrate the South, Rhode and West Rivers and the Chesapeake Bay by having fun and contributing to good causes.
Finally, we want to tell you that our radio program, Living Green in Annapolis, last night was about the effect of hurricanes on the environment and what our local jurisdictions are doing to be ready. City and County officials are on alert as we write this because of the impending storm. Listen to the show to learn more and for some tips on what you can do to get your home and business ready for any storm.
Stay tuned for more information on the visit of the Dartmouth Green Bus! We're working to pull them in from their Washington, D.C. visit to come see our Chesapeake Bay next Friday!
Cheers,
Lynne & Elvia
