In celebration of Anne Arundel County's wild open spaces and efforts to keep our waterways clean, join Annapolis Green, the Scenic Rivers Land Trust, the Severn River Association and the Severn Riverkeeper for a three-hour easy, guided hike along the recently restored Cabin Branch. It's a delightful walk in the woods along mostly flat, easy terrain.
The hike will be led by Keith Underwood and coordinated by  Mike Robinson of the Severn River Association.

The project was implemented by Keith Underwood, Underwood and Associates Ecosystem Restoration, with design by David Wallace, both long time pioneers in effective stormwater management and improving our watersheds. The initial restoration work along the stormwater outfalls has created a "lovers" walk, as stated by some who have seen the dramatic transformation of these wetlands.

Cabin Branch passes under the railroad line slated for hiker/biker improvements, so you will get a chance to see this as well.

Severn Riverkeeper Fred Kelly and David Wallace will be there as well.

No RSVP is necessary.

Background

The Cabin Branch Stream Restoration Project is a major breakthrough in waterway protection taking huge stormwater runoff from the Annapolis Mall and businesses along General's Highway and slowing it down with a series of step pools and weirs to allow it naturally infiltrate into the ground. Before the project began, a canyon had been excised into the stream from stormwater entering it in two very big pipes under the roads. That had completely destroyed the hydrology and ecology of what had once been a productive, fishable stream.

Now that the Severn Riverkeeper has poured over $900,000 into the latest cutting-edge technology, the stream is expected to come to life again. And it will serve as a prototype that can be duplicated throughout the Bay watershed. Come and see for yourself!
