Top of the Line

The Holidays are here! May they be Bright, filled with sparkle... and a touch of Green. Happy healthy, Green Holidays from Annapolis Green!

Congratulations to our friend and Founding 100 sponsor, Jared Littman, for being selected to be Annapolis' newest alderman! He will be sworn at the city council meeting on January 14, to take the place of Matt Silverman who resigned. Jared is the owner of K&B True Value, but he is an environmental attorney by training. He will bring that persepective to the city council... Hooray! Congratulations, Jared!

Holiday cheers! May your days be merry and bright,

Elvia & Lynne

Wintertime Greening

Most of this is from the Greener Ideal website and it consists of five things you can do to live Green during the winter.

The first is: get a home energy audit to see if your home or business is leaking heat. You might need new windows or additional insulation. Or radio show is on this topic -- on Dec. 26.

Second, install a programmable thermostat to keep temperatures and heating costs under control.

Third, insulate your water heater. Those blankets are cheap and they help keep the cost of hot water down.

Fourth, invest in green plants to keep in the living room, the kitchen, bathroom and bedroom. They help recycle and freshen the air you breathe all winter long.

And last, keep the air moving with inexpensive fans. That will help alleviate cold spots in the house and keep the air fresher.

Celebrate Sustainably

There is a lot of hustle and bustle this time of year, but it's easy to celebrate in a sustainable way by simplifying and not calling into the "buy more" trap.

We encourage you to shop local, but also to shop with the end in mind: Will the recipient really use the gift? How will it be disposed of when it's no longer usable or wanted?

We dedicated our December 12th radio shows to Greening your holiday celebrations -- from party planning to invitations to decorating to menu planning. Have a listen

Last Call for Screening of Promised Land

annapolis green logo Promised Land is the new movie coming out at the end of the month about the effect of fracking on a small town. It stars Matt Damon and was directed by Gus Van Sant (Good Will Hunting, Milk).

The film will be at Bow Tie in Annapolis, either at Harbour Center or at the Mall -- they haven't scheduled it yet. It opens on Dec. 28. But, if we wait a week and get a group of at least 25 we can see the film the evening of Friday, Jan. 4, for just $6.50 per ticket. If we get over 100, we may be able to lease the theatre and have a special showing just for us on Saturday morning, Jan. 5, for $6.50/ticket.

Please go to our Facebook page or send us an email to let us know if you are interested in being part of an Annapolis Green viewing of the film. If we have enough interest we'll set this up!
 A CFL Christmas
By Bob Bruninga

'Twas the night before Christmas and all through the house
The lights were ablazin' to light up the South.

The tungsten was burning as for a century old
but no one will change for so they've been told
by a fat man on radio shouting his creed
that to use these new bulbs is a leftist decree.
A government conspiracy to force them to use
less energy now is a communist ruse.

Only one in four households even ventures the task
to change old habits and make energy last.

So here's one for ya to light up your Parish.
At 50 cents each its a bargain you'll cherish.
And now for three years you'll be thankful and smugg
as you save eighty dollars and round your kids hug.

Their future will brighten with energy delightin'
from the sun and the wind and the sea it won't firghten.
Wasteful Lighting reduction by a factor of four
is so simple and clean we should have done it before.

This is only the beginning of our future of hope
as we lessen our gas use and  for security we cope
with less foreign oil by a factor of four
as we switch to electric and drive more and more.

So you see it's so simple and lively and quick
it won't be too long before even St. Nick
drives an EV sleigh all charged up just right
And Rudolph's LED nose lights the way oh so bright.

So good cheer to you and your family and friends
Remember our dreams are for energy without ends.
And I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight
"Happy LIghting to all, and to all a good night!"
