40th Anniversary of the Clean Water Act

Last week marked the 40th Anniversary of the enactment of this most important bit of legislation.

From the Chesapeake Bay Program Office: "Passed on October 18, 1972, the Clean Water Act set a new national goal "to restore and maintain the...integrity of the Nation's waters." A revision of the 1948 Federal Water Pollution Act, the Clean Water Act helps states establish water quality standards and gauge restoration success. It regulates the discharge of wastewater into rivers and streams and of dredged material into wetlands. And it helps states implement conservation practices to cut back on pollution from non-point sources like urban, suburban and agricultural runoff." Read more about the Act what YOU can do to keep our water clean and read even more about the Act on our website.

Volunteers needed to teach kids about the environment!

Want to share your passion for the environment with sixth graders? The Annapolis Maritime Museum needs YOU.

The Museum, in partnership with Anne Arundel County Public Schools, NOAA, Chesapeake Bay Savers and Maryland's DNR, has launched its innovative 2012-2013 Oyster Environmental Literacy Program for 6th grade students from four area middle schools. What the Museum needs now is outgoing, enthusiastic and committed volunteers throughout the school year. Knowledge of oyster ecology is helpful, but not required because training will be provided for each session. The hours are 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and you can choose from any number of dates. The Museum is asking volunteers who will commit at least five days within a five-week period.

Over the course of the school year, more than 1,000 sixth-graders will receive 20 hours of instruction in the classroom, at the Museum, and out on the water. The program examines human interaction with the environment, oyster ecology and industry, and the measurement and tracking oyster spat and water quality. As a volunteer you'll be proud to participate in Maryland's new, cutting-edge Environmental Literacy Initiative - and you'll add to your own knowledge about oysters and the Chesapeake Bay!

For more information, contact Amanda Elliott, program coordinator, aelliott@amaritime.org or 410-295-0104.

5:30-7:30 p.m.
Free. No RSVP. Cash Bar (donations for your beverages)
Where does the time go? It seems like just yesterday that we were immersed in our Boat Shows recycling and now it's nearly November! We have lots of news to share.

Save the Date for Green Drinks

Our theme is coming together but it will be something like "Holiday Gifts that Give Back." We want to showcase local, creative, "out of the box" Green gifts. For example, are you part of an environmental non-profit, a B-Corp, or a Green for-profit company with a product or service that would make a nice gift? If so, contact us at port@annapolisgreen.com to reserve a table. We'll have ten tables available for display... 'Tis the Season for Sustainability... Be creative!

Last Month's Great Green Home - It's Still Open!

This is an overdue thank you to Mike Baldwin and his crew for their Green Drinks hospitality at the beautiful Maryland Green Designer Show Home on October 9.

We took a little time off from the busy Boat Show downtown and headed to "the country" in Gambrills to get an amazing education on our homes of the future. We thoroughly enjoyed and appreciated Baldwin Homes for hosting us in a gorgeous, comfortable, built-Green-from-the-bottom-up home.

This was one of the most plush-ever Green Drinks gatherings... we felt like we had our own private party and were even wonderfully spoiled as Baldwin Homes donated both the appetizers and the beverages (a first for a Green Drinks host). We were very happy that our Green Drinkers were generous in your donations to Baldwin's charities, Hospice of the Chesapeake and Make-A-Wish Mid-Atlantic.

Our October 3 radio show was all about Green building in general and about this home in particular. Click to listen and learn a lot more about it. The home is in the Preserve at Severn Run, in Gambrills, just off Route 3. It's just a short drive from Annapolis and well worth it a visit. It will be open to the public Thursdays through Sundays until November 17, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tickets are $20 per person and the proceeds benefit the two charities named above. Learn more and get directions on our website and don't forget to go downstairs to visit the Green Marketplace.

If you venture a half-mile farther on Route 175 you can't miss the fabulous Corn Maze at the Maryland Sunrise Farm (the largest parcel of certified-organic land in Maryland, and fully engaged in agricultural production), the former Naval Academy Dairy Farm.

We interviewed President Mike Baldwin on our last radio show. Click to listen and you'll want to come to Green Drinks and see it for yourself!

Not only is the home beautiful, Baldwin Homes did it right -- they installed infrastructure -- a coastal plains outfall system designed by Keith Underwood -- that mimics Mother Nature to control stormwater runoff before any construction began. The development has had no detrimental effect on the Severn River at all because of this. Severn Riverkeeper Fred Kelly talked for a bit about how this development is an example of how development and the environment can co-exist. There's a video on our website that explains the stormwater system. Just click here.

We were very appreciative of all the help we had (as we were right in the middle of the Boat Shows) and would like to especially thank Lisa Webb of Baldwin Homes and Morgan McLoud of Chic Communications. In addition, our wonderful volunteers, Jon Haas and Ann Garvey, did yeoman work greeting and promoting our scavenger hunt through the house!

Cheers and don't forget to make a difference on Saturday or... get ready for Sandy,

Green Halloween

Witches are green .... Zombies too? And, yes, there really is a Green Halloween website. There you can get some ideas including what to give out instead of candy. And the National Aquarium in Baltimore is holding a special event. The idea is to provide a greener version of a holiday that can sometimes be very resource-intensive, and unhealthy for your little ones' teeth and nutrition. Learn to swap conventional candy for healthier, more sustainable treats -- no GMOs, no high-fructose corn syrup, no child-labor chocolate here. You'll also find "spooktacular" recycled craft projects, DIY costumes, and more fun green activities to inspire you.

Reaction to our campaign to bring recycling to the Annapolis boat shows was positive. In fact, just about every exhibitor we spoke with had good things to say. Here's what one exhibitor wrote to Boat Show management:

"The recycling cans were a fantastic idea, the old trash cans always attracted bees (to which I am highly allergic) and trash seemed to run over them. The closed cans were a much nicer approach, and it was nice to see the folks supporting recycling, something we all need to be more aware of."

We and WasteStrategies deployed over 25 eco-stations
throughout the show -- our entire inventory -- and they were colorful reminders to Sailboat Show attendees and vendors to "Do Good for the Bay" and recycle.

Festival Greening, of which recycling is a part, is one of Annapolis Green's projects and we plan to continue our efforts to Green outdoor events, making both event organizers and the City look good by doing the right thing! Read more.

We owe a big thank you to the four companies sponsoring this effort and making this public awareness campaign possible:

Make a Difference Day & Fall GreenScape

Saturday is National Make a Difference Day - a national program encouraging groups and individuals to volunteer in their communities. Closer to home, Fall GreenScape will be held Saturday too. It is a City and community partnership investment of beautification, clean-up, and planting in public spaces throughout the City of Annapolis every spring and fall. GreenScape was founded through the efforts of former Mayor Ellen Moyer and the Annapolis Recreation and Parks Advisory Board. For more than 20 years, hundreds of projects have been initiated and adopted by individuals, community groups and neighborhood associations. Look for people at work in your neighborhood Saturday and lend a hand. More info is in our calendar.
Food for Thought: Pollution Trading

"Can a polluter who exceeds his pollution in one place make up for it by reducing pollution somewhere else? And does such a trade ultimately help the Chesapeake Bay recover?"

That the lead of "Time to Make Sense of Pollution Trading," a Bay Journal article written by Bob Gallagher, founder and chairman of the board of the West/Rhode Riverkeeper organization. Click here to read more.
The Environment in Court

There are those who want to do away with the pollution limits established for the Bay by the federal government. There is a case in court now that many say will determine the very future of the Bay. The court case, with the American Farm Bureau, fertilizer manufacturers, housing developers, and other industry lobbying groups on one side and the U.S Department of Justice, the U.S. EPA, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, and municipal waste treatment plant operators on the other, is before a judge in the U.S. District Court in Pennsylvania.
