Art A Whirl is upon us! This Weekend!
2014 Dates and Hours:
Friday, May 16th - 5:00-10:00 p.m.
Sat, May 17th - Noon-8:00 p.m.
Sun, May 18th - Noon-5:00 p.m.
This is the single biggest art event each year for Clay Squared. Over 2000 people are expected to visit us this weekend. We are very excited by our special features we are adding this year.
Josh has started a Artist-in-Residency program in the studio. Famed Painter/Sculptor Dougie Padilla will be our first resident artist. You can come see his progress and new work.
Michael Flora, studio assistant, to Josh has created a sound installation called "Sounds of Clay Squared." He recorded all of our daily sounds: making tiles, kilns clicking, clay smacking, etc. and composed a musical composition, which will be a very cool audio experience. A CD will be available to purchase.
Layl will be teaching mini polymer classes for $4 each all through out Art-A-Whirl. (Other classes are featured on the left side bar too.)
Back by popular demand, we will also return the studio into a mosaic design studio for Art-A-Whirl visitors to play with Clay Squared tiles! Fun for all ages!
We will have free Art-A-Whirl directories and free parking. Start your Art-A-Whirl with us and then take the trolley or walk up 13th Ave to take in this most amazing event.

Artist in Residence at Clay Squared |
 | Dougie Padilla, Clay Squared's first Artist-in-Residence |
This year Clay Squared to Infinity has started an Artist-in-Residence program. This concept has been in development for almost a decade. Josh Blanc, Co-founder of Clay Squared, artist and master tile maker, has chosen Painter/Sculptor Dougie Padilla to be his first resident artist. The program is still in its experimental stage, to test out ideas and see how the program flows. We are working out details like: What are the needs of an resident artist? How do the artists work with Josh? Is this a give and take experience? What are the goals of both the artist resident and Clay Squared? We hope to flush out these issues and make the program be a long term, successful collaboration for future artists.
 | Day of the Dead works in progress |
The goal of the program was, and is, to find artists interested in exploring handmade tile. We want them to utilize their experience, vision and desire to push themselves outside of their regular mediums. Living and working in the Northeast Minneapolis Arts District, which is full of artists, Josh believes it is important to collaborate and see what possibilities exist to make great art. There has been a long tradition of visual artists turning to ceramics in mid, to late career, to experiment with master ceramic craft/artisans. Pablo Picasso is one of the most well known examples. Paul Gauguin also took on a ceramic endeavor later in his career.
Check out Dougie's other work and come by and see his works in progress.

The Sounds of Clay Squared @ Art A Whirl
|
Michael Flora is not only a tile maker by day, but a musician by night. He has an unlikely take on music as well. He loves sampling sounds and then turning them into musical compositions. While we were making tiles one day, we were discussing all of the sounds available here at Clay Squared. Then we came up with the idea of making "Sounds of Clay Squared" which will be featured during Art-A-Whirl with all of our other demos, mosaics and great art.
2014 Art-A-Whirl Dates and Hours:
Friday, May 16th - 5:00-10:00 p.m.
Saturday, May 17th - Noon-8:00 p.m.
Sunday, May 18th - Noon-5:00 p.m.

NE Library Frieze |
Layl and Josh both had pieces chosen to be part of the NE Library Frieze. This new, photographic frieze includes 40 high-quality images submitted by artists who live or work in Northeast Minneapolis. The images were selected in November 2013 by a 12-member art selection committee and represent the many types of visual art forms created by Northeast artists.
This project was funded by Hennepin County's One Percent for Art program, which dedicates one percent of project costs in library building projects of $1 million or more to the selection, purchase and installation of works of art. Thank you, Hennepin County!
