September 2015

Greetings!

As you are reading this, Lani and I are just arriving in Paris -- I imagine we are looking for a sidewalk cafe to enjoy coffee and a croissant in.

But as I write, the trip i still several days away... such is the life of schedules and tasks...

I realized a few years ago that the schedule I was keeping was not sustainable over time and that unless I did something, my health was really going to suffer. There were already signs; weight gain, body pain that would come and go, fatigue. I told myself that I was fine -- really, I did not feel unhappy, I was managing. But I was also exercising way less than I used to, I was spending less time with my friends and oh yeah, my marriage was falling apart!

Meditation and yoga were my lifeline. My practice served me very well helping me to keep perspective, stay motivated and not burn out. Still, it was clear that I needed to make a change, I just could not find my way to how.

Getting divorced finally gave me the real kick that I needed to stop making excuses -- there's so much to do, people need me, I can't afford to work less.... I decide: no more.

And so I stopped. Well, I didn't stop completely... read more.

Musings from Our Teachers
Celebrating Fall's Bounty by Karen Rouchleau

I really love this time of year. It's apparent in the small transitions we see here and there, that Mother Nature is getting ready for fall. The days are gradually getting shorter as our time with the sun lessens each day, the leaves on the trees will soon begin to start shifting from greens to the warm yellow, reds and oranges that make each trip out a beautiful experience, and the delicious fruits and veggies of fall will soon be taking the place of summer's stone fruits and summer squash. As humans, we transition with Mother Nature naturally. The warm weather of summer time fun and vacations transforms into cooler days and our daily lives change. School starts again, work schedules solidify and life becomes a little busier in general.

Do You Know...
about the Advanced Studies Program at HeartSong?

Have you seen info about it in passing but weren't quite sure what it was all about or how you could benefit? Here's what you should know about our Advanced Studies program:

What is it?
A 4-10 month program which includes our yoga immersion and 200 hour teacher training programs. Meetings occur one weekend per month.

Who will guide me?
The program director - Leslie Ellis OTR, E-RYT 500 - accompanied by other HeartSong staff.

Who is it for?
Students who have at least one year of yoga experience who are interested in refining their knowledge of yoga postures, breath, yoga philosophy and the more subtle aspects, such as the chakras and Ayurveda.

What's special about the experience?
Every year, a new group of advanced studies students of all ages and all walks of life gathers at HeartSong - some folks are taking their very first steps down the path of self-discovery, while others continue on a journey started long ago. Some know they are moving toward the goal of becoming a yoga teacher to share this practice that has changed their lives. Others realize this interest once they've begun.

It's an active, living, breathing process that evolves with the
unwavering support of classmates and experienced teachers.
In those first meetings especially, there is anticipation, excitement, even a little trepidation about what's to come. But over the course of the year, there is a metamorphosis that occurs. A heightened awareness emerges. A deeper confidence. Not just in your yoga poses, but in yourself. Year after year, we watch this shift take place in students and it's so inspiring.

Sounds amazing! When can I get started?
Right now! We're currently enrolling for the next program beginning in February 2016.

Will this be your year to get growing?

Student Snapshot: Dianne Perry

1. When did you start doing yoga and what was it that drew you to HeartSong?

I saw a notice posted in the student union of LSU for a meditation and yoga introductory lecture in 1971 and went to it really to learn about meditation. The sponsor was Ananda Marga Yoga Society and they taught yoga as the preliminary to meditation. I joined the group and that was the beginning of my connection to yoga which has been important to me ever since. Last year, almost simultaneously several friends recommended HeartSong and I decided to take some classes there after Christmas. I found HeartSong warm and welcoming, the energy was vibrant and the other students were committed. I was looking to refresh my home practice and found I was energized by the classes I tried.

2. What are the greatest benefits you derive from yoga? Are there any measurable shifts you've noticed in your life off the mat that you attribute to your yoga practice?

I feel yoga nourishes me on a very deep level-it brings a feeling of wholeness, energy and spaciousness to my body and mind. To me, yoga is the eight-fold path with asana practice just one part of it. However, asana is the key to the doorway into the larger yoga for me because through the physical practice I feel more centered and peaceful.  Yoga has helped me in many ways, particularly in dealing with stress and difficult times.
