What's Inside:

Musings from Our Teachers

Sum, sum, summertime....

                And the living is easy?

Ah yes, summer and all its joys - I have been getting out doing lots of hiking, enjoying the outdoors, my dog, the farmer's markets and our beautiful NW days.

And I have been incredibly busy. I am having a great time with all my lovely private clients - thank you for your dedication to practice and self-exploration! We just completed the Summer Intensive and I am continuing on with another short series focused on the Chakra of Wishes and Dreams (see below in Do You Know...) have a retreat on the horizon and am actively talking to excited yogis about next year's Advanced Studies: Immersion and Teacher Training.

With all that going on, I am also in the last weeks of preparation for a long awaited European vacation! Lani and I are heading off to France and Spain for a couple of weeks for a walk through the countryside bookended by city explorations in Paris and Barcelona.

Yes, summertime - you, like me, may feel busy but don't let that take the easy out of it! Enjoy every breath, every warm (hot!) ray, each breeze and all you do.

Namaste,

Musings from Our Teachers
Growing Younger by Chris Lehman

Recently, I spent some time at the hospital with my mother while she was recovering from surgery. My mother is in her mid eighties. Her condition was not life threatening, and the surgeon specifically said that it was only because she is in such great shape that he even considered doing the operation.

It didn't surprise me to hear him say that. My mother has been growing younger since she retired from paid work. At around age sixty eight she took up yoga. When she was seventy she talked about how much she loved riding a bicycle as a little girl. So of course, she bought a bike and started riding again. This last winter she complained of taking a couple of falls, but said, overall she had a great ski season. She keeps not only the body, but the brain in shape as well by volunteering as a medical librarian at a local hospital.

When the life span is described to us it is dictated as a straight line that represents aging from the time we are born. A more accurate and realistic description of a lifespan is based on the idea of gain-loss.
doyouknow

Do You Know...
there are more than 7 chakras?

It's true! The major 7 get the most press, but did you know there are up to 21, maybe more minor chakras throughout the body, including the hands and feet?

One of these is a very special chakra that Leslie's teacher, Mary Paffard often refers to as "The Chakra of Wishes and Dreams" also known as Hrit chakra.

Intrigued?

We have an opportunity for you to explore these starting next week.

The first meeting of Leslie's 5 class mini-intensive, "The Chakra of Wishes and Dreams" is  next Wednesday, 6:30-7:30 am -- and you're invited!

When did you start doing yoga and what was it that drew you to HeartSong?

I first became curious about yoga in 2004.

I tried yoga for the first time in 2006.

I attended my first yoga class in 2011.

I fell in love with the world, my self, my body. I felt love in my chest for the first time in spring of 2012.

When I left my studio in Appalachia I wandered Oregonia heartbroken looking for a home until I saw HeartSong. It was so similar outwardly to Earth Lotus, the studio I left behind that I felt an actual tug toward it, and so in the spring of 2014, I came to my first class. I remember weeping with relief lying on my mat that evening. I've been here ever since and I stay because this approach is so supportive to my spiritbody needs.

What does your current yoga practice consist of and what are the greatest benefits you derive from it?

My personal practice is in stability and consistency and so my focus is on gaining strength in and integrity of my body. I do slow, simple movements. I am in a season of rest for an ankle so my practice has become a more restorative one. I use props and I arrange them and my body in a way that is supported and comfortable and then I LAY THERE AND BREATHE. It is sometimes difficult to stay still and remind myself over and over (and over): this is what I am doing I am doing enough; I am enough. In addition to this I have a modified active practice that includes one leg balances and wide leg standing postures lying on the floor with my feet on the wall and different parts of the body propped and have increased the awareness of and mobility in my hips and shoulders as a result.
