July 2015

Greetings!

As Americans many of us have a strong sense and value for independence.

Independence of our country will be celebrated this weekend and I know that for many, most even, the appreciation of the personal freedom we have living here, and which has been deeply enculturated over time, will come to mind.

Dependency, need, an inability to provide for oneself - these all bring up questions, judgement - even the most compassionate of us, if honest, likely have some thought or feeling that these qualities indicate a lesser circumstance.

I love my independence. I am proud of what I have accomplished in my life. I work hard - too hard sometimes - my efforts keep me going (and sometimes wear me down!) The places in my life where I feel dependent often grate on me. I have to actively cultivate acceptance, self-love and kindness to not feel less than. This has enhanced my sense of independence. I can truly care for myself; take care of myself; appreciate myself.

I am, at my foundation, happy and whole. I believe that. I experience that. I stay mindfully present, although at times with effort, to remain connected, to that. It has taken some work to get to that consistent place. I celebrate that I am not dependent on external circumstances to provide it.
It is within me.

I recently started dating again. After several years of a marriage shifting, changing, ending; selling my home, moving; divorce - its fun. I feel lighter. I feel happier.

WAIT!!! I don't need someone else's validation or presence to feel happy or good about myself. I find myself in resistance - I don't want that! I have worked hard to be in that state regardless of the other. It IS within me. AND, it is beautifully supported, nurtured and even growing by being in the presence of attention, attraction and acknowledgement. By being seen by another and validated something more opens up.

Once again, a sweet reminder about the importance of connection. Yes, it is within AND having it reflected back helps magnify it. Is that dependence that makes me weak? Needy? Less than?
No!

Still, even after all this time,
the sun never says to the earth:
"You owe me."
Look what happens with a love like that.
it lights up the whole sky!

 Hafiz

My interdependence, something to celebrate as firecracker exploding brilliance far exceeding what I can ever do all on my own. Ah, this is love! And no, I am not "in love" (yet?) but this, is what love is about.

So be brilliant on your own. And love. Love with your heart wide open. Connect and let your brilliance magnify under that light.

I would love to hear about your experience with interdependence. Please head on over to my blog to leave a comment

Namaste,

Musings from Our Teachers
Are You Staying Cool Enough?
by Kayci Cavenah

Summer is wonderful, isn't it? The kids are out of school and families take their long awaited vacations. There's a plethora of outdoor activities and everyone has fun things scheduled for the next few months. Oregonians especially look forward to the sunshine of summer. But let's face it, the heat of summer can be oppressive.

In the ancient science of Ayurveda, the Pitta dosha is associated with heat and governs the season of summer. Its physiological association is with the digestive system and is often related to the digestive fire. Whether you have a lot of Pitta in your constitution or not, the Pitta dosha can easily become out of balance during the summer months. This can be due to the outer heat of the summer temperatures and also inner heat of excess Pitta. This trapped heat in the body often shows up as skin eruptions, rashes and redness, canker sores, hemorrhoids, heartburn, indigestion and general irritability. Basically, it's the body's attempt to rid itself of excessive heat.

Do You Know...
The Benefit of Retreating

As we pulse through life there are obvious expansions and contractions: we move in, make progress, meet our challenges and have those times that feel more stagnant; there are pull backs, and rests.

Generally the expansion phase is more highly regarded. When someone feels in the groove, like things are moving they feel happier and more engaged. Then, during contraction, they will often perceive the situation more negatively. It can feel like nothing is working. One may feel alone, isolated, less than....

But both phases are important for growth. Those seemingly fallow times are perfect for germination.

In addition to the obvious pulse, there are also the more subtle pulsations. These take intention and sensitivity to notice. We are, constantly within each moment, whether in an expansive or contractive phase - pulsing. Approaching, retreating; moving in on something, moving out.

It is within these more subtle pulses that we grow on a deeper level. By cultivating consciousness about where we are flowing and where we are blocked, where and ultimately why we approach and what sends us into retreat, we develop a heightened capacity to transform ourselves and our experience.

With consciousness comes the option to shift. And I believe that consciousness within those retreats can be the very most potent. To be aware of your movement away, how that feels and what you are seeking through the space created is to be aware of not only what's holding you back but also what you ultimately need to move forward.

Then take it a step further and consciously create the retreat - sometimes even when things feel like they are flowing, a little time and space can help you to really enjoy the flow more completely. And when things are not going as you would like, retreat can be like a breath of fresh air that not only gives you a rest, but can also help open your view, shift your perspective and support you in seeing what ways things are actually moving perfectly.

So how do you bring more positive retreat into your life?

  • Get your yoga mat out and instead of pushing yourself to do a certain kind of practice, simply lie down and see what your body wants to do. Listen to the little whisperings that come through.
  • Meditate. Don't worry if your mind isn't quiet. Just sit and pay attention to what is.
  • Get outside. Look, listen and breathe in nature.
  • Get away. Take a time out, take a full out vacation. Consider taking a conscious trip - a retreat where you are nurtured body, mind and heart.communitycorner

When did you start doing yoga and what was it that drew you to HeartSong?

I started with yoga about a year and a half ago. My fibromyalgia led me to want to go out into the world and find anything and everything that could help me. I was referred to Leslie by my health coach as someone who could help me to reduce my stress.

What does your yoga practice consist of and what are the greatest benefits you derive from it?

It has morphed a lot since the beginning, but the greatest benefit has been the ability to get in touch with and listen to my body. From the beginning, just learning how to breathe and sit still and feel what my body has been trying to tell me has been so valuable. Today, my practice consists of listening to my body - which sits straighter and feels longer - and an almost daily routine Leslie and I developed that I can do in a short period of time without over exerting. It feels as though it comes out of me organically and supports the needs of my body and ends with me sitting still to absorb the benefits.
