The Art of Self Care

It seems there is always something that can lead us away from taking the very best care of ourselves. We get busy. We have responsibilities. Other people have so many needs. It can feel like the time it will take to do our best self-care, just becomes another stress.

But time and time again I hear you say, "Oh, I am so glad I got myself to class; I almost didn't come because (fill in the blank), but I feel so much better now!"

Yoga is truly one of the best self caring things you can do. It's effect on body, mind and heart are invaluable in keeping you healthy, balanced and living well.

As summer is on its way in and the beautiful weather begins to call you more and more outside, what will happen to your yoga practice? It can become a challenge to get yourself to the studio but we want to really encourage you to do it anyway!

Here are 5 good reasons to keep up with your yoga this summer:

5. Your yoga studio needs you, even in the summer!

4. You need your yoga! It can help to keep you in balance with all the other activities you
do. More running, walking, hiking, cycling, golfing, gardening and ___________ .......
can be hard on your body - do yoga to keep feeling your best.

3. The kids are home and even though you thought (once again) that everything would
slow down once they were out of school....it doesn't.....yoga can be your personal
retreat and you know you need it!

2. Early morning classes are available.......you get your yoga in before the kids even get up!

Evening classes allow you to take a needed and deserved break after all the activity of
    the day.

And the #1 reason for you to keep up with your yoga this summer.....

Why would you let something you love this much not be a regular part of your life? It                      makes you feel great. You have worked hard to get where you are in your practice                          and don't want to start over in the fall AND it really makes a difference in how you feel,                  how you think and how you treat everyone around you. You love yoga! (And we love you              so get on over here!)

Namaste',

Musings from Our Teachers
Find Where the Delicious Place Is
by Lani Jelen

June is my birthday month, the summer solstice, the longest day of the year. June is also when the rains of Oregon slow down and temperatures rise. Our dreams we nurtured over the winter and gave voice to in the spring can now come to fruition. In Chinese medicine it is a taxing time for the liver and kidneys in the transition from spring to summer, so being mindful of supporting those places with, of course, plenty of water and making sure we have quiet, personally nurturing moments to balance the outward momentum.

The body feels more movable and can open and expand more easily with the warmer temperatures. One feels the internal push to express in every part of life. In yoga practice it is a good time to incorporate work with lengthening and opening the chest and spine. Perhaps full back bend or urdhva dhanurasana is not in one's capabilities but there are other poses that are wonderful that bring flexibility to the spine and open the front of the body.

Do You Know...
we have special early morning yoga in the summer to help keep YOU practicing?

That's right, every summer, early in the morning when its cool and quiet, yogis are here at HeartSong keeping their yoga practice strong even when outdoor activities are calling later in the day.

Our Summer Intensive is an annual tradition now in its 8th year! Each season, Leslie offers a new theme that supports both consistency and a deeper exploration of yoga and all it offers us in our lives.

This year we are excited to offer Mudra, Mantra and Meditation: An 8 Week Intensive Exploring the Contemplative Side of Yoga.

This 2 class/week experience will provide a grounded yoga asana practice along with expanded time and space for quiet and meditation.

Each class will begin with a mudra (hand gesture) and mantra (sound) practice designed to support clearing and opening energy channels and creating strong intention to carry through the practice and your week. This period will be followed with a skillfully crafted yoga asana sequence that will help you to fully embody the energetic and intention of the meditation while also building proficiency in an intermediate posture specifically chosen each week as a focus. Class will end with another period of meditation giving you a complete experience of yoga and supporting deep transformation.

Student Snapshot: Becky Fahey

As we gear up for our 2015 Summer Intensive, we thought we'd ask one of our long-time early morning yoga students, Becky Fahey, to share a bit about her experience. Becky has participated in our Summer Intensive program every year since 2010, as well as the Wednesday morning Sunrise Sangha program for the past 2 years.

When did you start doing yoga and what was it that drew you to HeartSong?

I started doing yoga at the gym, but the classes didn't really resonate with me and didn't motivate me. When when I was in the area one day back in 2009, I stopped by to pick up a brochure from HeartSong.  From the very beginning yoga classes I went to, all the different instructors and other students in the classes truly motivated me and I just felt connected.

Thinking back, how did you feel before you made early morning yoga a part of your life and what shifts have you noticed in yourself since then?

Yoga is the only early morning thing I get up for! It has shown me personally that I can wake up and actually be committed to an early morning activity. Through this focused study, I notice that when something goes a little wrong, I can say to myself "there must be a reason I'm here right now". Like when I'm driving and there's a traffic jam, or I can't leave the house at the time I want to or something. I say that to myself -- and really believe it.

Keeping up your practice in the summer time!

Here are some suggestions:

1. Consider our summer intensive - you get your practice done early in the day so you can enjoy your evenings outdoors.

2.
If you can't make it to class, consider scheduling a private lesson before summer gets busy so a teacher can help you put together a routine you can do on a regular basis on your own.

3.
If you're good at self-motivation and want a great online support for summer practice, contact us for more info about Leslie's Wisdom of the Goddess audio series.
