Last Sunday was Mother's Day and while I love the sentiment of celebrating Mom, mothering and all involved with that, I read that the origin of Mother's Day in the US is not necessarily tied to what it has become.

Mother's Day was originally petitioned for by mothers rather than for mothers. The intention was to make a statement about war and to recognize the power of mothers standing for peace. Mothers who were seeing the horrors of combat were boldly saying that there is something inherent in the act of mothering that makes one specifically tuned to the promotion of life and especially adept at seeing the absolute wrongness of war.

I may be biased here since I have not actually given birth to a baby, but I sincerely believe that we all have the mothering instinct within us. We all incubate, birth and grow much in our lives and if we were really honest with ourselves, we would see that war is never an answer to our suffering. Only that which promotes life and the inherent goodness of all that lives, can really bring us to our greatest power.

The paradox is that we do sometimes have to take a stand. A stand for what we really believe in, want with all our hearts and know is right to create or sustain. And sometimes a stand for one thing is a stand against something else. Which could seem like a conflict - a war of sorts.

So what's the difference?

Musings from Our Teachers
Mother's Day: Honoring the Divine Feminine by Amarylis Morrow

Mother's Day is a time to celebrate, appreciate, and thank our earthly mothers. It must be noted, though, that our experience of mothers and mothering is not the same. There are some who have a strong, enduring friendship with their mother and others who struggle in a toxic or dysfunctional relationship; those who have never even known their mother and those who have cried goodbye to their mother much too early. Many are mothers now and there are also many who yearn to become mothers, still.

We may have biological mothers, adoptive mothers, or various other mother-figures who have lovingly stepped into our life. Regardless of where you are or have been across this spectrum of mother-love, I invite you to take time to celebrate the divine mother/the divine feminine this Mother's Day. It's a practice for everybody- men, women, mother or not!

The divine mother or the divine feminine is within all of us, male and female. We find creativity, unconditional love, compassion, wisdom, beauty, gentleness, patience, acceptance, forgiveness, intuition, and healing all carried by the divine feminine. It is a powerful force that gives the inspiration and power to create anything and everything, even life itself.

Do You Know...

even your yoga teacher has to deal with the challenges of aging and having a body? (Luckily, this can help her to better support you!)

- The following is shared by one of our teachers, Kayci Cavenah. -

The body is a finely tuned instrument which, at its best is totally miraculous! Even so, all the things we do throughout our lives do impact how we feel, how we function and sometimes even cause body parts to "wear out"!

We might wake up in the morning to random aches and pains or find ourselves quickly out of steam. Sometimes we have an injury that leaves its mark on the body. Through sports and physical activities in our youth, we may have simply abused various parts of the body. And for many of us, the body is predisposed to certain types diseases.

This last year, I had to face the fact that even though I practice yoga and lead a relatively healthy life, I needed a hip replacement.

It's a long and challenging story but I feel very positive about the experience overall and through the journey I have learned a lot and have that wisdom to share.

For that reason, I'm holding a yoga for hip replacement workshop next month on June 6th. It's for anyone who wants to find more ease in their stride following a hip-replacement or a place to enter a real discussion about the causes of hip joint pain and the mental, physical and emotional process of replacing a hip joint.
