What's Inside:

Musings from Our Teachers

'tis the season of spring - new growth and change. Some days I feel like I can hardly keep up!
We have a few new things coming up including a few teacher changes - yes, again.

Life seems busy for everyone around me. There is so much to do - most of it really great - it can be hard to manage one's energy to do it all. Because of this - too much good stuff happening - both Heathers (Brinkmeyer and Russell) and Susana have decided to move on from their teaching posts here.

I so appreciate what each of them brought to our community and I know that if you knew them, you will miss them and that we all wish them well!

In their place will be new energy, new approaches and new excitement! Paul Telles will be teaching at 7:30 on Saturday mornings and an old friend, Chris Lehman is going to come in to take over on Tuesday evenings. They each bring unique and distinct gifts to the studio and I am very happy to welcome them both! I hope you will come and try out their classes and welcome them as well.

In the spirit of change I share this quote by Patricia Schneider which came across my desk today:
--
"Everything is transient. Everything is precious. Be here, now. To be here now when you are forty-five is often to be exhausted from the day's work and from the thought of tomorrow's work. To be here now near the end of life, here with love or with the memory of love-along with the memory of stars and galaxies and the intimate roads of home- is to know how transient, how precious, the now is. And that knowing becomes more intense, more suffused with joy, every day."

Many blessings,

Leslie

Musings from Our Teachers
Work, Stress, Yoga by Paul Telles

Let me start by saying I loved the tech industry. During my two-decade career, I met many interesting, creative people, traveled widely, and learned cutting-edge technologies that have changed the world. And I made pretty good money.

But there's no doubt that working in technology - or in any high-pressure corporate environment - will take its toll. The long hours hunched over keyboards, the brutal deadlines and schedules, the steep learning curves - all of these challenge the wellness and balance of any tech worker.

Enter Yoga! Soon after beginning my practice nearly 12 years ago, I realized it functioned almost like a counterpose. Just as, in a specific Yoga sequence, I would follow a challenging backbend with a gentle forward bend, I structured my overall practice to help me overcome the stresses and strains of work.

Do You Know...
Spring is Kapha Season?

Yep, it's finally here -- that season we're always dreaming of while enveloped in the dark of winter.

According to Ayurveda, the sister science of yoga, spring is the season of kapha dosha predominance. In an effort to counter the wet, heavy quality of kapha, we might feel prompted to do some spring cleaning in our living spaces, which includes our bodies! This might involve getting more movement during the day to wring out stagnant energy (yoga can be especially helpful in striking the necessary balance) or even partaking in a dietary cleanse.

Want to learn more about the doshas? Stay tuned later this month for more information about a special Ayurveda workshop we'll have coming up on May 3rd!

Our April restorative class with Heather Russell will also be kapha season-friendly. She'll start things off with some light, but active movement to give those heavier kapha qualities a good stir before settling into the more classic restorative poses. The practice will bring you back into the wisdom of your body and breath, and allow for better sleep and even more energy when you wake up.

Student Snapshot: Mary Washkoske

This month, we chatted with Mary, one of our most faithful restorative yoga-goers. If you have yet to try one of our restorative workshops (generally held on the 3rd Friday of each month), you're especially invited!

These 2 hour classes provide you with the much-needed space to "just be" at the end of a long week. The supported poses offered are each held for several minutes, giving your body and nervous system lots of space to relax so you can luxuriate in some quality "you time". Mary is a big fan of the practice, so we are really grateful to her for being willing to share her experience. Thanks, Mary!

How long have you been practicing yoga in general and restorative yoga in particular?

I have been practicing yoga for about 9 years. I did not even know about restorative yoga until I came to HeartSong and have been practicing it ever since.

What benefits do you find our monthly restorative workshops bring to your life?

It re-balances me. It totally relieves a week (or more) of built up stress. Not only does my body relax but so does my mind. After restorative yoga I turn into a marshmallow!
