What's Inside:

Metta - loving kindness, friendliness; a feeling of love in light of whatever is happening.
Compassion - a wide open acceptance of the human-ness in each of us and the vast array of experiences we have in living a human life.
In my studies of both yoga and Buddhism these teachings have been some of the most beneficial.

As I move through my days there are many opportunities for both loving kindness and compassion. Any moment of tension, stress, dissatisfaction or discontent becomes a chance to pause, breathe, remember; to put myself in the shoes of the other, relax.

It is a practice, not a perfection. However it brings me back every time - "I am in the perfect place, right now!"
I have found that this is what I am most drawn to sharing in my teaching right now. Relax and see what is wanting to emerge - don't push; no need to work so hard. Like usual, what I am drawn to teach is just what I am learning. I am in the perfect place.

Here is a prayer I say every day to Kuan Yin, the goddess of compassion and "she who listens":

"Please help me to show compassion
in the face of all suffering,
my own and that of others.
Assist me to listen in and accept
whatis now, what is right now;
and to trust it is perfect.
May all beings be held in love and light.
And so it is."

I am really excited to share teachings that include an awareness of Kuan Yin and the blessings of compassion and deep listening with my Sunrise Sangha group at our Wisdom of the Goddess Retreat in a couple of weeks. Likely, if you are in other classes with me, you will be hearing some of the same encouragements. And if you want to explore the possibility of relaxing, self nurturing and not working so hard in your yoga, give me a call. I would be happy to talk with you about how we might bring that light into your practice more fully.

Namaste,
Leslie

What's on Your Spring Cleaning Agenda?
by Kayci Cavenah

Tired of the winter doldrums? Ready to stir from your winter hibernation and move into the newness and freshness of spring? As I look past my computer screen and through the dirty window to the beautiful sunny day outside, I realize that spring has already arrived. It makes me want to wash those windows and dig into some spring cleaning projects. But spring cleaning for me is not just about cleaning my house. It's about cleaning my other house, the body temple. Ayurveda, the "medical" sister-science of yoga, is all about keeping the body in its optimum state of health and functioning. It's also about moving in concert with nature.

For nature, spring is the fiscal new year, a time to release built up toxins, re-tune the immune system and revitalize the body in order to prepare for another year. It is the perfect time to detoxify the system. Whether we realize it or not, just the fact that we eat and breathe means that we take in toxins, through our food and through the air.

Do You Know...
We now have a weekly class called
"Yoga for Techies"?

Yep! We're rolling this series taught here over the past few weeks by Paul Telles into an ongoing weekly class offered on Thursday nights.

Time: 5:30 - 6:45 through 4/2
then
5:45 - 7 pm from 4/9 on

Even if you don't consider yourself a "techie" person, we encourage you to try it out.
Don't let the title confuse you!

Designed with the average office worker in mind, this all-levels class includes poses, breathing and relaxation techniques designed to help unwind your body in ways that are especially helpful if you've been sitting at a desk hunched over a keyboard all day.

Visit our website to read more about it and reserve your spot in class on an upcoming date!

Community Highlight
Student Snapshot: Gioia Mayer

Yoga is a practice that literally has something for everyone -- it doesn't discriminate. This month, we talked with Gioia, who has been seeing Leslie for weekly therapeutic private lessons for the past 4 years. During that time, she's made some great strides in her overall level of fitness, wellness and mobility.

Here's her story:

 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When did you start doing yoga?

I started yoga with Leslie in January of 2011; this was my first ever foray into yoga.

What made you choose and stick with therapeutic private lessons at HeartSong?

A niece whom I love dearly and admire greatly suggested yoga to assist me with some of the physical challenges I was experiencing as a result of MS and years of a sports mad, and not always circumspect youth. My doctor mentioned that there was a studio nearby, and when I noticed HeartSong's sign, I was intrigued enough to look at the web site.

One 50 minute session with Leslie, and I felt better than I had after six weeks of formal physical therapy. It was such an eye opening, wing spreading moment.
Leslie has supported, nudged, and encouraged me every step of the way. I am inspired each time, every class, at how Leslie helps me to bring something more than I dreamed I could ever do again.
