What's Inside:

Musings from a Favorite Poet

Happy February! The love month!!

This month began in a bittersweet way for me. I have been through some challenges this last year that have encouraged me to really look at how I care for myself, especially in relation to really spending time with me, in deep listening. And, I can happily say that my commitment to myself and living to my highest potential is even higher than ever and that indeed, I am giving myself a lot of love these days.

At the same time, I just got word that my divorce is final.

The two processes divorcing and disengaging from a very important and substantial 20 year relationship, while at the same time recognizing that even with the most sincere intent to engage in radical self-care, I had let myself put my marriage above the relationship I so desire with myself, even as it became more and more clear that the marriage was not sustainable, has been amazing food for thought and growth even if sometimes frustrating, disheartening and downright sad.

That said I feel like I have come through a very powerful time with again, a deeper and richer relationship with me. As one door closes, the opportunity is there to turn around, look down the hall and see all the other doors and choose, anew. And while my relationship with self is not new, I am enjoying the opportunity to see myself newly, embarking on new roles, reinvigorating old interests that had been set aside and simply enjoying each day as it comes.

As Derek Walcott so beautifully says in his poem "Love After Love",

"There will come a day when with elation you will greet yourself
arriving at your own door, in your own mirror and each will smile
at the other's welcome and say sit here ............feast on your life"

May you in this month of love enjoy all your relationships including and perhaps more than any other, the one with your very special someone, you!

Namaste',

Musings from a Favorite Poet
Love after Love
by Derek Walcott

The time will come
when, with elation
you will greet yourself arriving
at your own door, in your own mirror
and each will smile at the other's welcome,

and say, sit here. Eat.
You will love again the stranger who was your self.
Give wine. Give bread. Give back your heart
to itself, to the stranger who has loved you

all your life, whom you ignored
for another, who knows you by heart.
Take down the love letters from the bookshelf,

the photographs, the desperate notes,
peel your own image from the mirror.
Sit. Feast on your life."
Did You Know...
HeartSong Loves Moms?

In February, we often think of Valentine's Day and treating that one important sweetheart in our life. But what a great month to also think about others in our lives who could benefit from our love and support, as well as self care. At HeartSong, we are directing our love to all the moms out there with some new program offerings beginning this month.

Our prenatal teacher, Amarylis, is kicking off a new Tuesday morning
Mom & Baby series starting Feb. 17th. She'll also host our all new Mother Nurture Nights on the 4th Friday of the month starting Feb. 27 - a space for moms to come unwind stress and build community through yoga, journaling, essential oils, conversation, etc. Share these opportunities with a mom you know about these or bring yourself!

We're also thrilled about our the debut of our Mindful Mama classes offered by Megan Barella, a Certified Positive Discipline Parenting Educator who offers classes around Beaverton. Part parent education class, part playgroup, come see what it's all about at our free intro workshop on Thursday, Feb. 26. commhighlight

Community Highlight
Student Snapshot: Becky Solonika

My name is Becky, I am the mama to Jude, 4 1/2 and Scarlett, 16 months. I have been practicing at Heartsong for years - I don't know how long! And I began taking prenatal yoga classes at HeartSong during my pregnancy with Jude in 2010, as well as mommy & baby classes as long as we possibly could at the studio! I returned for prenatal yoga in 2013 during my second pregnancy with Scarlett.

                            --------------------------------------------

How long have you been practicing yoga and what was your catalyst for getting started?

The first yoga class that I took was at my community college in 2001. I think I was just looking to fulfill a gym requirement and thought yoga sounded like it would be fun, and not to intimidating to try. I knew immediately that I had found something that worked for me. Since then, I've always been practicing yoga in some form or another. I've tried many different styles of yoga practice at various studios, using DVDs, trainings, and with lots of different teachers.

As a new/expectant mom, what are some of the things that you found you needed the most support around that yoga has been able to provide?

It's hard to express how much I LOVE prenatal yoga. First of all, there are so many physical benefits. Practicing yoga during my pregnancies allowed me to maintain a level of physical fitness, and to continue to grow in my strength and flexibility. My body awareness and acceptance were also benefits. I believe that my regular practice helped to keep my stress levels extremely low, which made for a calm and healthy environment for my growing babies. When it finally came time for my first child to emerge from my body, I was able to literally fold myself in half and watch him enter this world with my very eyes - from an extremely intimate vantage point. I completely credited this experience to my physical yoga practice.
