What's Inside:

Leslie Ellis 09
Greetings!

This week marks another anniversary for our country's freedom - Independence Day. Each year we celebrate as neighbors, communities and a country as a whole the freedoms we have living here in the United States. I certainly appreciate living here. I recognize that we do experience rights here that are not the general rights in all places on the planet. That people here tend to live a higher standard than many people in some other countries and that I have a lot of choice in my life. I appreciate that I can vote and that I can speak relatively freely about my beliefs and values and that I feel pretty safe. Not everyone is our country can say that though, and I recognize that too.

I don't believe however that we are independent or that as a nation, we are actually free. We are all dependent. Each individual has some amount of autonomy but even that has limitations. We are all dependent on one another, on our environments, on our governments and on people and governments far outside of the US. There is no way around that and I can't see a scenario where having it otherwise would create a better world for any of us. I think for that to happen we should begin to celebrate our connections and recognize how reliant we are on one another.

On a personal level we are not independent either. Independence means "to self govern and to have sovereignty over a territory". Each of us certainly has some ability to self-govern of course, but we have a structure within which we do that and certain boundaries that contain our rights. Some may believe they have sovereignty, supreme power and authority, over the territory of their lives but I see and hear more talk as if they have little or no control. Both perspectives, I believe, are illusion.

Can we be free? Jump on over to my blog for some thoughts about that and the concept of "inner-dependence".....

And if greater "inner-dependence" intrigues you, watch my  video below for a fun offer to deepen your yoga journey.

Blessings and until soon,

Leslie

Growing Your Yoga
Moving with Life by Lani Jelen

What is growing in your yoga?  What is growing in your awareness? What is growing in your consciousness? What is growing in your life? What is growing in your garden this beautiful time of year that is so full of life? I like to think we grow our yoga by doing it, by paying attention while we do it by noticing the subtle changes over time and each day, where it is different, where it is the same, loving the sensation of being in the body, reveling in its movement and the fact that we are able to move in such ways and feel so alive. Even frustrations, lack of ability, lack of flexibility can feel alive as here we are to experience that, to find the edge, to look over the cliff and soar in our freedom.

I just returned recently from visiting one of my Aunts who is now 92 years old...

Welcome New Teacher Heather Brinkmeyer

Please join us in welcoming Heather Brinkmeyer to the HeartSong teaching group!

Heather has actually been around the studio for several years now, first as a student and more recently as a teacher.  She went through the HeartSong Yoga teacher training and also did an additional year of mentorship in gentle yoga with Leslie.  You may have taken class with her already, as she filled in while Toby was on leave this spring and has also been subbing some other classes.

Be sure to check out her gentle class on Thursdays at 4 pm. Whether you're new to yoga, working with an injury or just want to take it easy -- Heather will take good care of you.

Beaverton Farmers Market

We'd like to extend our thanks to Sandy Girdler, who won our "Morning at the Market" prize during Bring a Friend Week early last month. She and Leslie had a lovely time together at the market last Saturday. Leslie got to introduce Sandy to some of her favorite vendors and they exchanged several great recipes.

Remember, we always love to meet your friends and your studio relies on your good words out in the community to keep us sustainable.

And, speaking of community and sustainable, we would like to take a moment to remind you about the Beaverton Farmer's Market. Sandy let Leslie know that she had not been for years. Maybe you too, because it is so easy to get your veggies at the local grocery, have not made time to go on a Saturday morning or a Wednesday afternoon.

But do go! The market is a vibrant reminder of the power of creative energy in the world as it appears through the pairing of great food offered with love and skillful entrepreneurship.

"Exploring Ayurveda" Weekend
with Leslie Ellis

Philosophy and Pranayama: What's Your Dosha?
Friday August 8th | 6 - 9 pm

Ayurveda is the 'Science of Life' and the healing system from India that parallels Yoga. The Ayurvedic mind-body type is one's constitution (Dosha). Each of us has predominant characteristics from the three Doshas. By balancing the elements though diet, nutrition, spices, lifestyle, exercise (yoga), breathing exercise (Pranayama), meditation and other healthy practices, our life purpose can become more clear so that fulfillment of positive desires becomes attainable.  And who doesn't want that?

Balance Your Dosha with Yoga Asana
Saturday, August 9th |  12 - 3 pm

In this yoga asana class, you'll look briefly at the three constitutions and practice routines designed to help balance each one exploring the effects of the various types of postures and ways to practice. You will leave with a better understanding of not only how yoga can continue to support your health and wellness but how to tailor your practice during the year in order to address your own personal constitutional needs.

Special offer: $45 each OR attend both workshops for just $75!
