Growing Your

Leslie Ellis 09

Last week I completed a Ganesha Mantra challenge -ganesha
40 days of 108 Om gang ganapataye namaha - om to the remover of obstacles, may my way be clear (very rough translation).

The last day of the challenge, I wrote a blog post but was not satisfied with it. Nothing overly significant seemed to have happened to report on. The post simply felt forced. I had completed my challenge but was I any different? No real obstacles had presented themselves. The way had been pretty clear. It was not very interesting. I threw it away.

Then the next day it started snowing. I immediately started hearing people talking about how they could not do what they had planned to do. How frustrating that was. People wrote scathing reviews of our horrible transit system that caused them to slow down. They got in their cars and ended up in 20 and more car pileups. The snow was a huge obstacle to life as usual and people were mad. Or, they were trying to make the best of it. They put chains on the car, walked to Starbucks, "just to get out" and posted on Facebook about "going stir crazy" and "thank goodness it is going to warm up and melt".

I watched this with some interest and having just completed over a month of contemplating Ganesha did perhaps affect my response. Read more...

Growing Your Yoga
New Shoots & Renewed Branches

The cold (and snowy!) edge of Winter is giving way to the first signs of Spring.  This time of year is so potent with new possibilities. Inspired by nature, we can explore our own new ideas, yearnings and directions, as well as renewing ongoing efforts and purpose with fresh energies.

The practice of yoga can be inspired by this energy as well, and can also support these explorations in the broader picture of our lives. Read more...

Did You Know?
Therapeutic Yoga is Not Just for Injuries - It Might Be for You!

A mindfulness-based yoga practice is an extremely important tool for the safety of your joints and your overall well-being. It can also be quite eye-opening to study in detail how different areas of the body work. Having a block of time where you get to focus on the specific anatomy and alignment of a particular area and practicing exercises related to those principles is key to growth and advancement in your yoga practice.

Our monthly therapeutic workshops are designed with this in mind. These workshops are perfect for you, whether you're a beginner or you've had a strong yoga practice for years. They're also great for yoga teachers and healthcare practitioners looking for continuing education.

Community Corner
Open House Review and a Thank You!

We'd like to use this space this month to thank all of our students, local healthcare practitioner friends and HeartSong teachers who came together at the studio last month for a successful celebration of wellness and community.

We had an amazing turnout, many attendees went home with gift certificates, and thanks to Beaverton Bakery, we were very well fed! We'd also like to thank Jean-Pierre Parent and Friends for lending their talent and love to our kirtan.

Make sure you stop by the table in our lobby next time you're in for class if you happen to be looking for a massage therapist, acupuncturist, chiropracter, etc., as we have lots of info available from our friends who contributed to the event. We are truly grateful to be connected with so many talented, caring practitioners in the Beaverton area whose services so greatly compliment the approach to yoga that we offer.

Visit our Facebook page to for a handful of photos from the gathering.

Botanica Floral Design

With Valentines Day approaching, many of you are probably thinking about what to do for that special someone in your life. If flowers are on your list, we have a new favorite florist for you.

Specializing in creations that include organic and locally grown flowers whenever possible, Botanica Floral Design located in SE Portland, is one of the "greenest" florists around.  Since the majority of conventionally grown flowers for the US market are grown in and shipped from South America, they travel an awfully long way and leave a substantial carbon footprint in the process. They also tend to be grown using chemical pesticides and fungicides that are harmful to the environment and the people who harvest them.

Beautiful can be sustainable!
