Don't miss out on these great opportunities!

Leslie Ellis 09

Welcome to fall. This is the time of harvest and appreciation of what has been grown this year. What have you put your energy into? What have you cultivated? And now, can you allow yourself time and space to appreciate what has come into being?

This time of year it is easy to start to panic a little. You suddenly see October is here and realize the year, 2013, is nearly at an end. You think of all the goals and plans you had when the year was new back in January and you may see projects not completed and others not even begun.

This is how it is. Most of us want to do way more than we can realistically accomplish. Let it go. If you are in sync with nature, you know this is not the time to try to grow something anew. You are not going to go plant something new in the garden; don't try to get new projects going either. Take a look around. Is there something almost complete that you would feel great getting done? Do that. But those unstarted things, they can wait until next year or maybe the fact that they are still undone is a good enough indication that they can fall off the to do list. Make space. Put things away. Do some gentle planning and organizing so you are ready to go in the new year. But other than that, sit back, relax and enjoy the fruits of your labor.

Ahhhhh.

Namaste,

Leslie

Growing Your Yoga
Advice for the Season from Kayci Cavenah

Having just past the autumnal equinox, you've probably noticed the seasonal change. We've slipped out of the warmth and activity of summer and into the shorter, colder days of autumn. The trees are beginning to turn those beautiful shades of red and gold. The fall season is about letting go, drawing in and preparing for the deep freeze of the winter season, a chance to hibernate and regenerate.

How about getting a good start on that by slowing down, turning inward through yoga and meditation, and helping your body relax and renew itself?Make a commitment right now to sign up for the 3 remaining restorative classes this year. Give your whole self, body, mind and soul, the gift of relaxation and rejuvenation.

Yoga can provide great support for parenting?

young-family-portrait.jpgThat's right -- yoga is not only good for moms and those who are expecting, but beneficial for anyone engaged in the process of parenting! When mom is happy and nourished, it makes for greater harmony throughout the family.

For moms (and families), yoga:
  • reduces stress, a leading cause of complications in pregnancy, birth and postpartum.
  • Teaches techniques for relaxation and being present in the moment.
  • Helps with common discomforts of pregnancy and postpartum
  • Provides space to connect with yourself, your baby and other mamas

Yoga is something that has always appealed to me, but lack of time, child care, and the fear of trying something new always held me back from taking a class.  This past year, however, it became clear that years of living under constant stress -- both of my daughters are on the autism spectrum -- was taking a toll on my physical and mental health.  I decided to give yoga a try, and I took my first class at HeartSong this past June.  I made it through the first class (although I freely admit to toppling over while attempting tree pose), and decided to try another.  Within a few weeks, I felt like things were starting to click, and within a month I was hooked.  ResourceCenter

Felicity Doula: Creating Happiness for Moms & Babies

This month, we would like to recommend Jessica Mattson Hinds of Felicity Doula as a wonderful resource for moms and families-to-be. She will be partnering up with Kayci and Toby this fall to offer the first in our new series of Birth Support Professionals Q&A sessions.

Jessica is very passionate about being a doula and supporting new moms and their families during the pregnancy and birth process. In a recent blog post, she expresses her thoughts beautifully on what drives this passion:

"Birth is the essence of life, in its purest form. Emotions are raw and honest, the atmosphere is charged by the entering of a new soul into our world. Giving birth is a challenge, a triumph, a life changing experience. It strips us down to the skeleton of our spirit, then builds us up into a more enlightened, stronger and more beautiful recreation of our truest selves."

Don't miss Jessica's visit to HeartSong, where she'll talk about the support a doula can offer during pregnancy, birth and postpartum. Bring your questions about labor, birth and newborn care. Please do share this information with friends and family who could use it!
