Coming Up at HeartSong:
 Workshops, Events & more!

Leslie Ellis 09
Greetings!

Happy Independence Day!
Or, as I like to think of it, Interdependence Day. Here we all recognize that we are truly intertwined with one another through our heart and spirit connections. Not only does HeartSong need you to thrive in the same way many of you tell us that you need us to do so, but everyone of us benefits from the existance of our joint community. Whether it is simply the fact that you know you can count on your favorite class helping to leave feeling better than when you arrived, you feel like the theme of the class was developed just for you but know others in the room feel the same way, or you enjoy the connection and laughter with your fellow students when you come, having a place to go that, as one of our students, Candy (see below), says "feels like home", gives something special that many of us don't have in many places in our lives.

All of the teachers at HeartSong are dedicated to supporting this sense of community but without every one of our students contributing their special offering of presence, it would be flat. So thanks! Thanks for being you, for being part of us and for continuing to nurture our sweet connections to one another, for our interdependence!

Namaste',

    Leslie
and love from everyone else too!

Growing Your Yoga Maddie_Headshot
Building Your Home Practice by Maddie Latham

Beginning or developing a home yoga practice can be a daunting task. The conditioned mind is all too ready with rationalizations or excuses to prevent you from starting. "I don't know what poses to practice", "I don't have all the props", "I don't have time." These are all thoughts that I had when I began my home practice several years ago, and sometimes they still sneak in to try and disrupt my routine. In the end though, the benefits of a daily home practice for the body and mind are so profound and easily felt, that once started, it gets infinitely easier to continue. For those of you that are thinking about starting a home practice but haven't, or have an occasional practice at home but want to expand it, I would like to share some tricks that can help you on your path. (Visit our blog to read on...)

Currently, Maddie teaches one of our on-site corporate yoga classes at Synopsys Inc. in Hillsboro and often subs classes at the studio.DidYouKnow

Did You Know...                                 Yoga is Good for Mothering?
Have you heard? HeartSong Yoga now features a wonderful trio of classes designed for expectant and new mothers.

If you are expecting, you can start your journey with Prenatal Yoga, helping to prepare your body for labor and delivery. For new moms, we offer weekly Mama Moves Yoga classes for moms and babies, as well as our monthly Wholly Mama Yoga workshops designed to help you de-stress, quiet your mind and nurture your entire being. (Jump down to the workshop section for more details on these classes.)

Though these offerings may specifically be designed for "mothers" in the more traditional sense, it is important for all of us to remember that yoga helps ALL of us to "mother" of ourselves. We know this intellectually, but in this fast-paced world of ours, it becomes so easy to get swept up in taking care of others at work, in our families, etc. that we end up putting ourselves last. In order to care for others, you need to care for yourself. Never forget that your yoga practice increases your capacity to nurture and hold space forCommunityCorner others in your life!
Community Corner
Q&A with HeartSong Student, Candy Hatchell

We deeply value all of the wonderful yogis who make up our HeartSong community. We know that we have such a unique group of students who practice here, and we want to share your stories. So, over the coming months we will be profiling different students here in our Community Corner as a way to raise awareness about all of you who truly make this community what it is.

This month, we talked with Candy, one of our long-time gentle yoga students. She was gracious enough to share a little bit about her yoga journey and her experience at HeartSong. Here's what she had to say:

1.  How long have you been practicing yoga?
I began taking classes at Tualatin Parks and Recreation locations about 18 years ago. Their
classes were at different locations, with different teachers, so I was thrilled when HeartSong
     opened in my neighborhood.

2.  When did you become a student at HeartSong Yoga and what was it that brought you in?
I don't recall the date, but sometime not long after it first opened. I like the community feel at
the studio. I often tell Leslie, "I feel like I am home when I am here."

3.  What do you find most sustaining about this community? What keeps you coming back?
The variety of class levels and adaptations will provide me with the stability to maintain a
     healthy lifestyle as I age.

4.  Is there a pose or sequence that was once challenging for you that you've grown to love?
My favorite-and most challenging-yoga pose is Tree pose because it reminds me to keep my
balance even when the "winds" of life are trying to blow me over

5.  How does your yoga practice affect the rest of your life out in the world?
Spending time in this community and growing my personal yoga practice has helped me to stayResourceCenter grounded in our ever changing world.

Resource Center
Eastern Body, Western Mind by Anodea Judith

Regardless of whether or not you're taking part in this year's Summer Intensive, which is all about the chakras, we wanted to share one of our favorite resources to help you deepen your study of your energetic body.

Eastern Body, Western Mind by Anodea Judith takes the eastern framework of the chakra system and weaves that knowledge in with western systems of psychology, therapy and theory to help readers learn more about their own development and patterns of being.

Each chapter walks you through a different chakra, explaining the qualities of each, exploring different traumas and abuses that may have affected each energy center and ways to heal. For those interested in doing some powerful self-inquiry through the lens of theWorkshopsEvents chakra system this is a must-read.
