December 13- Yoga for Foot Health
|
Do you take your feet for granted? With all the actions that they allow us to do, like standing, walking, running, and jumping, and the experiences they enable us to have, it's important to care for them just as you would any other part of your body. So often we neglect them until they start hurting and then we're in trouble!
Yoga is one of the best activities to help you care for and start to bring more awareness into your feet. How our feet are positioned when we stand affects the rest of our posture from the ground up. In our culture, the shoes we wear often don't support our feet correctly which changes the natural position of our toes and arches. One easy way to start connecting with your feet is to stand in Tadasana, (mountain pose) and notice how your weight is distributed. Close your eyes. Feel into the four corners of each foot and lift up through your arches. Notice the lightness that this small shift brings to your entire body, right up through the crown of your head. Do you feel a little taller?
For a great resource on foot health, check out the wealth of information that our podiatrist friend, Dr. Ray McClanahan shares on his website at www.nwfootankle.com. You'll find books, articles, videos, and more!
In addition, consider joining us for our first Therapeutic Focus workshop of 2013, "The Feet, Ankles, and Knees" happening on January 13th from 12:30-3pm. You can read more about it and sign up here. |
