November 28th - Don't Just Survive the Holidays--Thrive!
|
|
Well, the holiday season is upon us! For so many people, the days between Thanksgiving and the start of the new year are jam packed with to-do lists, shopping trips, and social gatherings. Maybe you feel like you're being pulled in so many different directions that you're just doing all you can to get through. But wait! Isn't this time of year meant to be enjoyed? When did things get so busy!
It is important to remember that as a yoga practitioner, you have the tools to stay present, manage conflict, nurture yourself and truly thrive, especially during this extra-busy time of year:
- Remember the importance of coming to your mat. Try your best to keep up with your regular routine to support you both physically and energetically.
- If time constraints make it difficult to get to class, identify some ways to make your off-the-mat yoga practice extra-rich in the next month. Think about small kindnesses you can perform as you go about the flow of your day. Such simple acts of giving and gratitude have a way of helping you to feel nurtured on a deep level.
- Notice and make use of your breath. When stressful moments arise, when you're feeling drained from too many social outings, or maybe while you're experiencing indecision about the perfect gift for someone on your list, zero in on your breath to help bring you back into your body and into the present moment. Being centered can bring clarity and help make decision-making much easier.
- Do restorative practices-- this could take the form of meditation or simply lying down with in savasana or with your legs up the wall for a few minutes in the day.
- Reframe the holiday season altogether. Take a look at the traditions you take part in. Honestly assess which ones sustain you year after year and whether there are any that you might be ready let go of.
So, you get the picture-- take care of yourself so you can enjoy your holiday season with the ones you love!
