October 31st - What Scares You in Yoga?
|
Happy Halloween! Today has many folks thinking about ghosts, goblins, skeletons and other spooks, but while those scary sights may be timely symbols of the holiday, we're thinking about the greater connotations of this theme of what scares you--both in yoga and in life.
When others ask about why we do yoga, we're often quick to gush about the positive emotions and effects of the practice-- it helps us feel healthier, stronger, or happier in some way. We think of it as fortifying. But there's this whole other element that we don't always share about so freely, and that is what scares us-- the things we must move through both on and off the mat in order to find that peace.
Some of the first things that come to mind are challenging physical postures, whatever those may be for you, such as inversions, arm balances, or standing on one foot. Maybe it's simply getting to your mat that's the challenge. Maybe you worry about not having the right yoga pants or that you're just "not doing it right". We all have little voices in the back of our minds that say things like this, especially when trying something new.
But sometimes yoga stirs up larger emotional matters that cause us to feel uncomfortable. As Leslie is exploring in her classes this week, what scares us the most in life is being authentic. Facing your true self and having the courage to live that truth no matter what takes work! Thankfully, yoga class presents the perfect opportunity to work with what's scary in a safe and supportive environment.
So, we invite you to be brave and courageous in your exploration this week and always. Eleanor Roosevelt had some great advice. "Do one thing every day that scares you." Ask yourself, "what's it going to be today?" For some added inspiration, we invite you to check out this excerpt from a great book called, "The Places that Scare You" by Pema Chodron on the matter of facing fear.
