Thinking ahead about this Sunday's Reflection

During our reflection, we'll be invited to think about what it means to be "Evolve" in our community. We'll do this in the light of our Evolve core values, vision, and mission, and the Twelve Principles of Creation Spirituality. 
 
In preparation, I invite our companions to reflect on how these three things have personally transformed themselves, how they see the world, or the world around them. We live so often with a "lukewarm" interaction with our world, one in which we feel we are constantly mitigating ourselves and the world. However, our Christian roots point us to a reconcilia- tion of the world with God. Reconciliation is not a word to be used lightly, as if it were the result of a negotiation in which everyone gets something, but not everyone got what they were seeking. Reconciliation is, rather, a transformational shift in how the world can work. The reconciliation of God to the world in what we call Christ - and we are the Body of Christ, making it real in the world right now - reveals that we should not be interested in transaction or technocratic, "adaptive," change, but rather engaging in transformational change. 
 
The Twelve Principles of Creation Spirituality work to reveal this transformational perspective. The Universe, and all within it, is fundamentally a blessing. The world is a gift, not an obstacle to be subjugated, but to be celebrated in awe and wonder (Via Positiva). Evolve's ministry, in my thinking, is nothing short of changing the world. So - how do we do that? How do we crack through the glazed-over emotions of people who have given up on any sort of religion, but want to be in love with God, the universe, and one another again? How do we become citizens of the world again, rather than individuals with preferences and power? 
 
Let's start with ourselves. We came to Evolve somehow. Something broke through, and woke us up to beauty and truth once more, and re-created us "as little children" (Matthew 18:3) with regards to a perspective of joy and delight in our work, worship, gathering, and meditation. So - what was that? 
 
Perhaps, if we better understand those experiences, we as a community of companions can begin to renew the energy that will reach to others who could be in love with life once more. We can understand how our community can be part of that joy again, renewing our community in a life-transforming (Via Transformativa) way.

I normally don't promote any- thing outside of the community, but when Suzie spoke of dreams I felt it's time to show that time isn't always when ...  My Stepdad, Paul Metzger, started a new career at the young age of 80!  I couldn't be more proud to be a Step- daughter to this man. He said to me that "you have to reinvent yourself." I can recall Wayne saying the same thing and here is a man reinventing himself.  I hope I have the same courage to continue and reinvent myself and surprise even me!!!  He is my inspiration!!! Open Arms to Re-open "its Doors" September 29

All are most welcome to this small discussion group which meets the fourth Tuesday of every month at various members' homes.  This month it will be at Rick and Tom's house.  We have a meal and discussion, often following a DVD on a topic such as The Cosmos, "Queering" the Bible, Progressive Christianity, etc.  We share the cost of dinner together with any overage going to support Evolve's ministry.  It is always a time of fun and getting to know one another better.  Gathering around 6:30 p.m, we are usually finished by 9:30.  Please RSVP Rick and Tom at 443-867-4997, and they will be happy to give you directions if you need them.

Pope Francis, Washington, DC, and Laudato Si'

On September 24, Pope Francis will be in Washington, DC, meeting with President Obama and Congress and speaking on the National Mall.  He is urging us, as we give thanks for all of creation, to be mindful of our interconnectedness and recommit ourselves to protect our planet against the ravages of climate change. 
Francis has also called for September 1 to be a World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation
 
The following is from the opening page of his recent Encyclical, Laudato Si':

"LAUDATO SI', mi' Signore" - "Praise be to you, my Lord". In the words of this beautiful canticle, Saint Francis of Assisi reminds us that our common home is like a sister with whom we share our life and a beautiful mother who opens her arms to embrace us. "Praise be to you, my Lord, through our Sister, Mother Earth, who sustains and governs us, and who produces various fruit with coloured flowers and herbs".

This sister now cries out to us because of the harm we have inflicted on her by our irresponsible use and abuse of the goods with which God has endowed her. We have come to see ourselves as her lords and masters, entitled to plunder her at will. The violence present in our hearts, wounded by sin, is also reflected in the symptoms of sickness evident in the soil, in the water, in the air and in all forms of life. This is why the earth herself, burdened and laid waste, is among the most abandoned and maltreated of our poor; she "groans in travail" (Rom 8:22). We have forgotten that we ourselves are dust of the earth (cf. Gen 2:7); our very bodies are made up of her elements, we breathe her air and we receive life and refreshment from her waters. 

My Search for Meaning

Evolve has gone through a few major, life-changing experiences during the past several months.  Each one of us, in his or her own way, struggles to accept, adjust, survive and progress as best we can, and I suspect we are all still trying to deal with that Via Negativa "friend" called Uncertainty. 

At the same time, I am in a place of longing to discern the meaning of what has happened.  John O'Donohue said "Every human heart seeks meaning; for it is in meaning that our deepest shelter lies"... and it is "one of the essential ways of finding [our] inner belonging."

Would you be in that place, too?  And have you gotten an answer?  Care to share it?
