From the Minister's Keyboard
The Rev. Dr. Wayne Schwandt
Last Sunday we were right at the midpoint Fall Equinox and Spring Solstice.  I am feeling the mid-winter blahs and blues.  I am longing for some time in sunny Key West or Fort Lauderdale. That's probably not going to happen, but I have recommitted myself to at least 15 minutes of quiet reflection and meditation a day to open my heart to spend some intentional time with God and listen.

I sit in our Florida room with the plant lights on so I get the benefit of that extra light, surrounded by the lushness of the plants which winter there.  The geraniums and hibiscus are blooming, and one Christmas cactus leaf got sufficiently cold one night to put out a bloom.  In the midst of the incense burning and a ring of friends with a candle burning, I listen with my spiritual ears.

This past two months have been a challenge in our community as we transitioned to being part of the UCCA.  We are learning new ways of relating and settling into new space for our Sacred Gatherings.  I have found the changes far more disruptive than I expected back in November when we decided to take this course.

I know we will find our way.  There is much wisdom in the circle we call Evolve.  And there are new people and a new wisdom yet to come.  I invite all of us to be open to the ways in which we feel the Divine is calling us and to share that with one another.

Each change is an opportunity to evaluate the way we do things and to explore new options and directions. As we come closer to that period which the church traditionally calls "Lent," let's each consider some intentional time set aside to listen to the Divine in our midst and to hear what others are willing to share about their individual and community spiritual journey.

I hope to see you at our Sacred Gathering this Sunday.  Ours is a time of new beginnings. Won't you join us on the journey?

Peace,
Wayne
Lenten Book Study Group with UCCA and
Asbury United Methodist Church will read
and discuss The New Jim Crow.

This Lenten Season Asbury United Methodist Church has invited UCC Annapolis to read and then discuss with them The New Jim Crow by Michelle Alexander.  It is an in-depth study of the sources and causes of racism in our society, with a particular focus on mass incarceration of African Americans.  Two groups are forming to meet weekly during Lent:  one on Sunday 1:00 pm (group begins March 1), the other on a Tuesday 6:30 pm (group begins Feb. 23).  We are asked to state which group we would prefer.  Please contact the UCCA office at office@uccannapolis.org or by phone 410-266-8596.
Registrations need to be in by February 15.

Creation Spirituality is about Creator's Hospitality

"...the Creator God is a gracious, an abundant, and a generous host/hostess. She has spread out for our delight a banquet that was twenty billion years in the making. A banquet of rivers and lakes, of rain and of sunshine, of rich earth and of amazing flowers, of handsome trees and of dancing fishes, of contemplative animals and of whistling winds, of dry and wet seasons, of cold and hot climates. But it is a banquet that works, this banquet we call creation, the human planet. It works for our benefit if we behave toward it as reverent guests..."

Move Maryland Forward with Clean Energy

Join us in Annapolis on February 23rd to tell Maryland lawmakers: DOUBLE wind and solar now. Pass the Clean Energy Advancement Act!  We'll make this message heard loud and clear:  "Clean energy, not fracking!" "Clean energy, NOT toxic smokestacks!" "Clean energy, NOT Cove Point!"

Doubling the amount of energy we get from clean, renewable sources--to 40% by 2025--is the biggest single way we can make sure more solar panels and wind turbines come to our state, not toxic fracking wells, smokestacks, and pipelines.

THOMAS MERTON SPEAKS OF A LIFE OF PRAYER

On the 100th Anniversary of the Birth of Thomas Merton, here is an Excerpt from an Interview of Thomas Merton by Bro. David Steindl-Rast, O.S.B.

[Br. David begins:] To start where you are and to become aware of the connections, that was Thomas Merton's approach to prayer.

[Thomas Merton:]"We were indoctrinated so much into means and ends," he said, "that we don't realize that there is a different dimension in the life of prayer.  In technology you have this horizontal progress, where you must start at one point and move to another and then another.  But that is not the way to build a life of prayer.  In prayer we discover what we already have.  You start where you are and you deepen what you already have, and you realize that you are already there.  We already have everything, but we don't know it and we don't experience it.  Everything has been given to us in Christ.  All we need is to experience what we already possess.

"The trouble is, we aren't taking time to do so."  The idea of taking time to experience, to savor, to let life fully come to itself in us, was a key idea in Thomas Merton's reflections on prayer.  "If we really want prayer, we'll have to give it time.  We must slow down to a human tempo and we'll begin to have time to listen.  And as soon as we listen to what's going on, things will begin to take shape by themselves.  But for this we have to experience time in a new way. "One of the best things for me when I went to the hermitage was being attentive to the times of the day:  when the birds began to sing, and the deer came out of the morning fog, and the sun came up - while in the monastery, summer or winter, Lauds is at the same hour.  The reason why we don't take time is a feeling that we have to keep moving.  This is a real sickness.".....
