From the Evolve Minister's Keyboard
The Rev. Dr. Wayne Schwandt

We begin a new calendar year together still wondering on stars, a baby, hopes and dreams.  There will be a special gift for the first 30 people who attend our Sacred Gathering this Sunday along with a fine New Year's potluck of roasted pork with sauerkraut, mashed potatoes, green beans, salad, and desserts.

Where does this ministry of UCCA want to go in 2015?  It is an old question now in a new context as we find our way inside a larger church community. We are feeling our way towards answers and probably more questions than we started with.

This is a community where questions are welcome.  A community where age old answers aren't cherished if they don't make sense today.  This is a community which has sought to welcome all to the Table of God's grace.  This is a community which finds God's presence in all of Creation.

Please join us in our journey of exploring and celebrating the Divine in the magnificent diversity of humanity and creation.

Happy New Year!

Peace, Wayne

     Comet C/2014 Q2, a.k.a. "Comet Lovejoy"

The New Year's Comet is getting brighter as it moves closer to the sun, because the increased heat is causing its ices to vaporize and release gases and dust, forming a brilliant hazy head and a faint, spiky tail....the comet's glow has been rapidly intensifying ....look for a green fuzzball a bit below the "belt" of the constellation Orion. The comet appears green because it is releasing cyanogen gas and a type of carbon gas, which both fluoresce when exposed to sunlight.

Gareth Williams at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics.....calculates that the comet will get closest to the sun on January 18, passing within 120 million miles of the solar surface.  But it will pass closest to Earth on January 7, getting within 43 million miles.  For context, our nearest planetary neighbor, Venus, is 25 million miles away on average.                                              - from www.smithsonianmag.com

Football is a sport but for some it is more.  I support the Baltimore Ravens because they don't always get a break.  This team has had to fight to succeed but yet they do.  Their victory is a victory for me.  Quitting isn't an option even when all my being is saying it is.  Success doesn't always mean you win but you tried, and there are times we don't try hard enough.

I, like many, have been guilty of that, but when I see our community I understand that I have no choice but to succeed, even if I fail.  I know that what- ever the outcome, I have a family that will support me and have my back.  If that isn't like football I don't know what is!  Thanks for being defense and offense...
Looking for a New Year's Resolution?  Join in the "fight for our lives!"

Resolve to do a little more this year for our Mother Earth.

Did you know that 85% of Marylanders are living in areas where the air they breathe is unsafe?  I recently attended a GAIN program about climate change.  A panel of local representatives from four organizations--the Climate Stewards of Greater Annapolis,
the Sierra Club, Chesapeake Climate Action Network, and Interfaith Power & Light--all  working in collaboration--impressed upon me that there's work to be done, and done right now, if we want to keep our Mother Earth alive and well in the future.

The list of needs to address concerning climate change is enormous and can be over- whelming.  That is why I found it helpful that these four reputable groups agree that their #1 priority right now is to end the burning of fossil fuels A.S.A.P.  We can work with them, and the following are just three ways we might help:

1. By educating ourselves and the people in our communities and circles.  There are still many people--you may know some--who are misinformed or passive about the causes of global warming and its profound threats to us and our children.  Speak with them.
2. By advocating:  writing letters, visiting public officials, collecting petitions, marching in protests, being ready to engage in civil disobedience.  For example, there is a clean energy bill in Maryland legislation whose goal is for 40% clean energy by 2025.  It is called the Maryland Greenhouse Gas Reduction Plan.  We can participate in a Lobby Day for this on January 14, 2015 in Annapolis.  We can sign and distribute petitions.
3. By greening our own home, our church, and our communities.  Interfaith Power & Light, in particular, provides various support for individuals and groups to save energy in their buildings.

Do you feel the responsibility to which our generation is called?  May we each find our own way to respond and "be the change we hope to see" in our community and in our world.                                                                                        - Sylvia Oliva

Eternal God, since silence seems to be
the voice of holiness, the only language
               you speak directly,
then I pray to be steeped in it
until I fear it less and welcome it
               as an usher to grace,
               a narrator of sacred mysteries;
until silence cease the fretful conversations
of my mind with too little else than itself,
until silence calm my heart to an ease,
convene my senses to an anchored focus,
hush my tongue to a chastened hold,
until I discern in the silence
an answer to that necessary question
which, for the very life of me,
               it has not yet occurred to me to ask;
until I am stretched alive and deep
               to its dimensions, and catch,
                    at last and ready,
your assuring wink at me.  Amen.
