From the Pastor's Keyboard
The Rev. Dr. Wayne Schwandt

I challenge everyone reading this column to make a new commitment to attending our weekly Sacred Gathering on Sunday evening. It is our main event!  It is the most likely event where guests come to check us out and see if we might be the spiritual home they have been looking for. Everyone's presence is important.  What a difference it makes to walk into a community of 25 instead of 15!  If you've been a way for a while, come HOME!  We miss you!

We don't call it "worship" because the Holy One, God, Ultimate Reality, Creator is not "out there" somewhere demanding our humble words and actions of adoration.  We gather to develop our experience of the Divine in our lives. Through music, sharing our joys and concerns for ourselves and others, listening to what I hope are words of wisdom about the teaching and life of Jesus and others, breaking bread and sharing the cup, being in our sacred circle of community, we experience the Divine within, between, and around us.

This is the Sunday Christians everywhere celebrate Easter. It is a particularly challenging Sunday for Progressive Christians following a Creation Spirituality path.  What question does Easter present to us?

Is it a call to believe in the unbelievable? That Jesus was physically known to his disciples and followers after the crucifixion?  or does the risen Christ proclaim that not even death can separate us from God's love?

Sunday in community we will explore the meaning of Easter for ourselves and what it might mean to be an Easter people.  Do we dare affirm that God is in all things, and that all things dwell in God?  Regardless of what happening in our lives can we celebrate the presence of the Divine? in the darkness as well as in the light? in the joy as well as the sorrow? in the death as much as in new life?

I hope we can and do!  Come celebrate the rebirth of life around and within us as we explore together on a path sustained by Love.
On May 18, 2014 Evolve Chesapeake will hold its
Spring Community (Congregational) Meeting.
Members of our Community who would like to serve on the Board of Directors for the next term can obtain a copy of the Questionnaire for Prospective Board of Directors by clicking here.

Please help the food bank if you can, by bringing along a food staple or personal care product such as soap, toothpaste, laundry detergent, etc. when you come to Sacred Gathering. It is always appreciated.
Look well to the growing edge.  All around us worlds are dying and new worlds are being born; all around us life is dying and life is being born. The fruit ripens on the tree, the roots are silently at work in the darkness of the earth against a time when there shall be new lives, fresh blossoms, green fruit. Such is the growing edge! It is the extra breath from the exhausted lung, the one more thing to try when all else has failed, the upward reach of life when weariness closes in upon all endeavor. This is the basis of hope in moments of despair, the incentive to carry on when times are out of joint and men have lost their reason, the source of confidence when worlds crash and dreams whiten into ash. The birth of a child - life's most dramatic answer to death - this is the growing edge incarnate. Look well to the growing edge!

People's Health Forum: Healthy Lives, Healthy Communities

Tuesday, April 22, 2014, 7:00 PM
Wiley H. Bates Legacy Center, 1101 Smithville Street, Annapolis

The Anne Arundel Chapter of the Healthcare is a Human Right Campaign, along with the NAACP, Chesapeake Climate Action Network, Caucus of African American Leaders, and the Wiley H. Bates Legacy Center invites you to our "Healthy Lives, Healthy Communities" Candidates forum. Join friends and neighbors together with community leaders and candidates for state office. The event will be an opportunity to speak directly to concerns on a range of health related issues including healthcare, paid sick leave and toxic air pollution, and its public health implications.

During the event residents will share how they are impacted by the private healthcare crisis including medical debt, bankruptcy and delaying care due to cost. We will hear about the largest trash burning incinerator in the United States permitted to be built less than a mile from public schools, and we will hear about workplace health issues such as paid sick leave. State legislative candidates will then have the opportunity to inform us of where they stand on these issues.
Refreshments will be provided.
