When will our consciences grow so tender
that we will act to prevent human misery rather than avenge it?

From the Pastor's Keyboard
The Rev. Dr. Wayne Schwandt

Our Board of Directors met this week and confirmed my desire to explore joint ministry activities with the United Church of Christ of Annapolis (UCCA).  Many of our members have met the Rev. Ryan Sirmons who was ordained and installed last Saturday as the new pastor of UCCA and his wife, Irish.  I was proud to be a participant in that service and to be among the clergy who gathered around Ryan to lay hands on him in the rite of ordination.  Ryan and Irish attended our sacred gathering on December 1 which recognized World AIDS Day.  They also attended our Christmas Open House.

During the ordination service, Rev. David Henry, former pastor of UCCA stood next to me and recognized me as the pastor who had performed the first same sex union at that church.  On November 14, 1998 we celebrated the holy union of two of our members, Ron Joos and Rick Parkinson, in that building.  That was less than two months after our first worship service at Centenary United Methodist Church.

What our joint ministry might look like is still under discussion and in its very early stages.  Ryan and I hope to hold some joint study groups together, probably the first one in Lent, joint worship services, and community service projects.  We believe that the two communities have much in common and can be strengthened through cooperation and service.  Their commitment to GLBT equality is clear.

Our cooperation is filled with possibilities.  We have friends in Ryan and Irish and I welcome them to our community as we seek to share in ministry.

Peace and Blessings, Wayne

Support our Food Bank
Food banks throughout the country have been hard hit for the last few years and the need has not bypassed Anne Arundel County. Please help those in need by donating pantry staples (tinned meat and fish, boxed pasta products, infant formula, etc.) as well as personal care products such as laundry detergent, toilet paper, disposable razors, bath/shower soap, deodorant, toothpaste, and feminine hygiene products. (You can't purchase non-edibles with food stamps.) Just bring a bag and place it on the floor near our Community Table.

PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING CHANGE:  There will be no viewing of Painting the Stars on Sunday, January 26.

Tuesday, January 28 at 6:30 PM, we will get together at Open Arms and Painting the Stars, Session 4 will be shown.  For more information, contact Pastor Wayne Schwandt at SchwandtW@aol.com.

 Lost finds...
 Hidden in boxes,
 Stuffed in bags,
 Reminds of whom we were---
 Feeling, thinking, doing, and...
These small treasures need to be
 Seen, understood, loved, and...
 So why put your
 Artwork, photos, accessories, and...
In boxes, bags, units, and places forgotten,
 Because we connect to it
But when does it become too much?

When do you need to let go?
When do you need to let go?
When do you need to let go?

Notes on Pastor Wayne's Reflection last Sunday: "Walking the Vision"
From Sylvia

"Wade in the water.  Wade in the water, children.  Wade in the water.  God's gonna trouble the water!" At times we enter waters that become troubled.  Troubled because of injustice, separation, or loneliness, troubled by poverty or constraints.  We want to know who has the truth we should follow.

Ever since the beginning of Christianity there have been many different voices telling the Christian story, and we need to enter into the ambiguity, the mystery, of not knowing.  It's okay to live with ambiguity, for then we can learn to hear each others' encounters with the Divine, and we can learn to recognize and better understand our own encounters with the Divine.

The way I encounter God in my life is what is important for me.  I walk the walk of my vision.  I claim that vision of God's presence.  This makes a difference in my life.  With this presence I am different and I act differently.  Each of us is going to walk into troubled water; at some point it will be into the waters of death.  We walk as "companions on the journey" and it is good to share with someone close to us what is important in our life.

We are called to pour out our life and to love wastefully without seeking recognition.  Jesus lived this way to his death.  Our call is to overcome our instinct for survival and self-preservation and to pour out our love, wastefully.

The Lord is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and of great kindness.
The Lord is good to all and compassionate toward all his works.

                                                                            - from Psalm 145:8-9
