The art of thanksgiving is "thanksliving." It is gratitude in action. It is applying Albert Schweitzer's philosoophy: "In gratitude for your own good fortune you must render in return some sacrifice of your life for other life."

Two Poems by Christina Borgoyn

autumn behaves

autumn behaves like each new breath
drawn into these winter lungs

waiting for dusk to set.

November Snows

into the deep
a velvet skyline
resurrects itself in vapid formation

the quiet hues, a dulcet tone
away and we are flying here together
through sin and betrayal

the lights are seeping low
and the danger is vast in buffeted noise
and my heart is still frozen
from the November snows

We are Partakers and Keepers of our Community

By Beth Lanier

Hands
As members and friends of Evolve Chesapeake, we are both partakers and keepers of the community. Many of us assist with the tasks of the service on a regular basis - things like set up and put away, ushering and greeting, being a reader or a communion holder, inviting to offering or hosting community hour. These are all important things, without which, our Gatherings wouldn't run as smoothly. Mostly we come to partake in the Gathering. We gain something valuable by coming and hopefully leave refreshed and a little more enlightened than when we arrived.

We must also consider our financial keeping of the Community.   We just passed a budget of nearly $38,600 to run Evolve Chesapeake during the upcoming year. This is not a budget with any fluff. It covers our minimum expenses for the next year. This amounts to just under $700 per week for 52 Sunday Gatherings in the year. I could break this down into a "per attendee" figure, but I'm not going to go that far. We count on the generosity of all our members and friends to make this a possibility.

I believe that it is important for each person to contribute to the welfare of our community. Not just of your time and talents, but to contribute financially as well. You will be receiving your Pledge Cards in the next week. I, along with the rest of the Board of Directors, am asking you to make a plan to give as generously and regularly as you are able and return your pledge card with your commitment to the financial keeping of your community.

We rejoice in and courageously honor the rich diversity within the Cosmos and expressed among individuals and

What Was Told, That
             by Jalal al-Din Rumi
      translated by Coleman Barks

What was said to the rose that made it open was said
to me here in my chest.

What was told the cypress that made it strong
and straight, what was

whispered the jasmine so it is what it is, whatever made
sugarcane sweet, whatever

was said to the inhabitants of the town of Chigil in
Turkestan that makes them

so handsome, whatever lets the pomegranate flower blush
like a human face, that is

being said to me now. I blush. Whatever put eloquence in
language, that's happening here.

The great warehouse doors open; I fill with gratitude,
chewing a piece of sugarcane,

in love with the one to whom every that belongs!

Notes on Pastor Wayne's Reflection last Sunday on "Food and Soul"
By Sylvia Oliva

"Anyone unwilling to work should not eat."  So reads a well-known line from the 2nd Epistle to the Thessalonians (3:6-13)! The context is the early Christians who lived together in communities and shared their resources and work
for the common good.  Maybe a few of them weren't quite pulling their weight.
Digging deeper, we acknowledge there is not only outer work but inner work that we're called to do.  For me, it's the inner work that tends to be slack. But with a willingness to dig ever deeper in our spiritual life and take stock of where we are (have a look at our spiritual health) we open ourselves to doing the work to be more present to the Divine. This may mean we need to empty ourselves, let go of our ego, seek a little silence in our life, etc.: the stuff of "Via Negativa."
It's also good to take stock of what we need that is provided by our spiritual community.  Maybe it is to be quiet and meditate in the Divine Presence, or it could be body prayer, or to sing and listen and celebrate Communion, to work for justice, to be with a spiritual friend, to find support in looking for a job, for pastoral care, or for something we don't even know yet.
We do know that it's spiritual practice that gets us there on the path of depth; this is the great inner work that is ours till the end of our journey. And I know that Evolve Chesapeake provides me with an abundance of what I need in our Sacred Gatherings and whenever Companions get together.
When we fill out our commitment/pledge cards for 2014, we might ask ourselves, "How do I want to invest in my soul-work for next year?"

Prayer of Saint Teresa of Avila

May today there be peace within. May you trust God that you are exactly where you are meant to be. May you not forget the infinite possibilities that are born of faith. May you use those gifts that you have received, and pass on the love that has been given to you. May you be content knowing you are a child of God. Let this presence settle into your bones and allow your soul the freedom to sing, dance, praise and love. It is there for each and every one of us.
