Maria Mitchell
Maria Mitchell
It's the birthday of the first professional woman astronomer, Maria Mitchell, born in Nantucket, Massachusetts (1818). She was the third child of 10 born into a New England Quaker Family. She was taught a bit by her father but largely self-educated. Her parents encouraged their daughters as well as their sons to excel, and she became a noted scientist, which was very rare for a woman back then. She was the first to discover a comet with the use of a telescope, in 1847, and was the first woman admitted to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. She taught astronomy at Vassar and had a crater on the moon named for her.

She said, "Every formula which expresses a law of nature is a hymn of praise to God."

THE POWER OF AN EMPTY SPACE

John Hunter, a public school 4th grade teacher in Virginia, was interviewed on the Diane Rehm Show (National Public Radio) on July 29, 2013.  In 1978 he created an amazing, interactive  board game to teach his students about Africa and the challenges this continent was facing.  Over the years the game evolved into a very exciting, moving, beautiful, serious and fun vehicle for creatively and experientially learning compassionate ways to make justice and peace in the world.

Students Playing the World Peace Game

Background from the website of the Diane Rehm Show:

"In 1978, John Hunter was a young teacher looking to make social studies relevant to inner-city kids. What he came up with: a four-by-four piece of plywood on which students attempted to solve the problems of Africa. Over time, this board became multidimensional, growing to encompass nations, prime ministers, the U.N. and the World Bank. The goal is to solve geo-political problems with the least amount of military intervention. And for Hunter, it's come to represent a philosophy of education. John Hunter joins Diane to talk about 'The World Peace Game' and three decades of teaching."

One of the commentators on the Diane Rehm's blog said of this: "We need to sequester Congress and make them play this game!"

"Queen of the Sun:
What the bees are telling us"

"Queen of the Sun: What the bees are telling us" is a profound, alternative look at the global bee crisis.  Taking us on a journey through the catastrophic disappearance of bees and the mysterious world of the beehive, this engaging and ultimately uplifting film weaves an unusual and dramatic story of the heartfelt struggles of beekeepers, scientists and philosophers from around the world including Michael Pollan, Gunther Hauk, and Vandana Shiva.  Together they reveal both the problems and the solutions in renewing a culture in balance with nature.  For more information contact Martha Scott at 410-295-7550 or at Zakiyyams@verizon.net.

A song by Erine Sedicum, wanting to be set to music.  "Follow" was originally written by Erine on September 26, 2004 and she recently rediscovered it.  In her own words she writes: "I discovered this in a Bible in my storage unit and I was taken aback by it.  I have the original and the edited..."  The only difference between the two versions is that in the original the last line of the chorus reads:  "Faith in God and his 'word' [instead of 'wisdom.']"

     "FOLLOW" (Revised July 25, 2013)

            CHORUS:

Follow the path in your heart
The voice that knows you well
The spirit that drives you-
Faith in God and wisdom.

2-Follow not the scholar
   that lives by the textbook
   Follow not the need
   to be a showman
   Follow not the blind
   that cannot see them-
     selves.
              CHORUS
1-Follow not the crowd
   that parties all the day
   Follow not the Rich man
   that dances with the dollar
   Follow not the flesh
   that loves only a moment.
               CHORUS
3-Follow in the Glory
of the joy of a beautiful
     morning
   Follow in the specialness
     of a child's smile
   Follow the warmth
of a gentle touch of love.
            CHORUS

Recollections from the ChristPath Seminar June 2013
Part 2 -  Matthew Fox:  "Jesus as Revolutionary"
from Sylvia's notes
ChristPath Presenters
Drs. Matthew Fox, Bruce Chilton and Andrew Harvey
Jesus was a revolutionary whose job it was to interfere.  He lived on the margins and was on the lam all his life.  He addressed all aspects of his culture and raised questions; he unmasked violence wherever he saw it.  This cost him his life.  We, too are called to be revolutionaries in our time.  Today's martyrs are those such as Oscar Romero who stood up for justice and for the poor in Argntina, and Sr. Dorothy Stang who was assassinated in Brazil.
There is much violence in our world today!  Our economic system is unjust--we need a new one that will work for everyone and every being.  And we need a new system of education.  Jesus was an artist, a parable-maker who brought all kinds of people together.  The artist today is undervalued while the scientist's and technician's work is valued.  But in education, especially, the intuition, feeling, and beauty which is the work of artists is needed--and education is important for passing on values.  So we need to re-invent the whole thing!
Our political systems are collapsing, e.g. the gutting of the recent voting rights bill.  Rachel Maddow in her TV news program unveiled the voting inequalities due to racism in our country.  We can choose to ignore this but we need to be OUTRAGED!  There is so much injustice:  sexual slavery and many other kinds of injustice toward women, patriarchal injustice, consumer capitalism, and avarice!
We so often project things onto Jesus.  We have much to learn and to unlearn about him.  There's a mystical side to Jesus, his stories and his controversial life.  In the writing of the Gospels, the parts that women played were gradually excised from the stories.  It's important to go back to the sources to renew our understanding of Jesus.  Jesus never claimed he was unique. The prophet Jesus, though he couldn't read or write, spoke in the Temple and he sent us to proclaim the Good News as he did.  But what are we doing?  We certainly have not done a good job the last 2,000 years, and now time is running out!  What are our false gods today?  Tribalism, nation, religion, family, tradition, Wall St., consumerism.
Jesus was about subversive wisdom, not conventional wisdom.  He had issues with his family.  "My family are those who hear the word of God and keep it," he said.  Jesus was from a rural area where there was an economy of exchange instead of money.  Hence his rural images of the Kingdom (vs. the Roman Empire).  The Kingdom was at the heart of Jesus' teachings.  He was baptized by John in a river--this was an inclusive ("everyone welcome") action.  It was not done in the Temple where priests officiated.  John the Baptist was Jesus' mentor.  Jesus overthrew the money-changers' tables in the Temple; he was pushing the boundaries, saying by this action that purity is not about rules but about what is inside. Jesus replaced Temple sacrifices with the meal, which was an affront to convention, and because of this many people deserted Jesus.
Jesus said "The Kingdom is among you (plural)," where two or three are together.  What brings to birth the Kingdom is community.  What brings about justice, including eco-justice, is community.  Jesus called for a "politics of compassion."  "The Kingdom" is actually a verb meaning "where justice and compassion are happening."
