"Queen of the Sun:
What the bees are telling us"
honeybee & hive
"Queen of the Sun: What the bees are telling us" is a profound, alternative look at the global bee crisis.  Taking us on a journey through the catastrophic disappearance of bees and the mysterious world of the beehive, this engaging and ultimately uplifting film weaves an unusual and dramatic story of the heartfelt struggles of beekeepers, scientists and philosophers from around the world including Michael Pollan, Gunther Hauk, and Vandana Shiva.  Together they reveal both the problems and the solutions in renewing a culture in balance with nature.  For more information contact Martha Scott at 410-295-7550 or at Zakiyyams@verizon.net.

An Experience of Play
by Erine Sedicum

Erine's heart
Erine and her coloring art from the Hungarian Section of the Smithsonian Folk Life Festival
I am the teacher, not the student.  On Thursday, I was the student.  I played a new game called Trash.  What is Trash?  It is a card game and my teacher was a future 5th grader and I enjoyed it.  So let me teach you to play Trash just in case you don't know.  First, each person gets 10 cards, 5 to a row and face down.  Kings and Queens are trash or discard, and Jacks are wild.  The objective of the game is to be the first to get Ace to Ten by flipping the cards.  You draw a card and count your position and replace the card, moving until you get a king, queen, or an already used card.  The instructions are simple...anyone want to play?

What makes this so special?  The child has physical limitations, but the beauty of the moment when teacher and child switched places can never be replaced or overlooked.  We as adults should view the world with the wonderment of a child, for if we did we would know that the imagination, spirit, and drive of a child isn't dead.  We just pushed it back into a place where we should visit more often.  So learn to play the Wii, go to special events, play board games, play on the playground, and sit and color on your birthday with four other adults (which is what I did).

Food Bank Collection

Help those in need by bringing to our Sunday gathering, an item or two for the local food bank when you are able.  Most welcome are pantry staples
: tinned meat and fish, boxed pasta products, infant formula, etc. and personal care products such as laundry detergent, toilet paper, disposable razors, bath and shower soap, dish soap, toothpaste, deodorant, and feminine hygiene products.  Collection is ongoing every Sunday.

OPEN ARMS WILL WELCOME YOU!

On Tuesday, July 23 at 6:30 PM, Open Arms will meet again in its Summer format.  This means a fun get-together to share a potluck supper and a relaxing evening. Contact Pastor Wayne at SchwandtW@aol.com for more details.  As always, all are welcome!

Trauma and Restoring the Body
An interview by Krista Tippet from "On Being"
Bessel-van-der-Kolk
Bessel van der Kolk
Trauma can be found in many places:
in our culture, movies and T.V., news, public policy, and in our war veterans
to name just a few.  Bessel van der Kolk is Medical Director of the Trauma Center at the Justice Resource Institute in Brookline, Mass. and Professor of Psychiatry at Boston University Medical School.  Van der Kolk says: "Trauma confronts us with the best and the worst," and we can't appreciate the "glory of life" unless we "also know the dark side." It can be a place where we encounter the power of love, of caring, of commitment to oneself, and of knowing there are things that are larger than our individual survival. Listen to him speak about the marvelous resilience of human beings and how they can reclaim their life when they've found ways to feel safe and take care of their body. This is a deep conversation, surprisingly filled with hope and joy, and one which has wide implications. Click here to access this audio-streamed program on National Public Radio's program, "On Being."

GMOs and your Health

DNA double helix
DNA Double Helix
The film, "Genetic Roulette: The Gamble of our Lives" warns us of many dangers of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs).  For example, it claims we are shortening the life span of our children and grandchildren by seven years due to their intake of GMOs.

Enjoy this Osprey-Cam
osprey
Chesapeake Conservancy has installed an osprey-cam by the nest of an osprey pair with three fledglings.  You can watch and listen to them live at any time by clicking here.  Be prepared for some Awe & Wonder! After an almost 90% decline in population from 1950-1970, osprey populations have rebounded due in large part to conservation efforts and the banning of DDT.
