We are honored to have Larry Griffin with us this Sunday, July 14
to receive a grant from our Benevolence Fund and speak during an extended Community 3.
 | Larry Griffin, Founder of We Care & Friends
|
The following is a short clip from an interview with Larry by Pamela Wood on January 6, 2013, which appeared in Capital Gazette.com under "2013 Newsmaker: Larry Griffin."
"Griffin is on the front lines of the struggle against poverty and addiction. The need for his organization's services - including meals, shelter, clothing, counseling, drug treatment and emergency shelter - is not diminishing. At the same time, financial support is hard to come by because of a stagnant economy in which potential donors face their own financial struggles."
-
"QUOTE: 'Some people say I put too much on my plate, and maybe I'm not looking far enough, but I don't see anyone else doing it,' Griffin said."

GAIN ENVIRONMENTAL FILM FESTIVAL
The Greater Annapolis Interfaith Network (GAIN) will show two films this summer at St. John Neumann Church, 620 Bestgate Road, Annapolis. They are free and open to the public.
The first film, on July 11 at 7 PM will be "Genetic Roulettte: The Gamble of our Lives," and the second film, on August 8 at 7 PM will be "Queen of the Sun: What the bees are telling us."
About
"GENETIC ROULETTE:
THE GAMBLE OF OUR LIVES"
(from GAIN's flyer):
"A film by bestselling author Jeffrey M. Smith narrated by Lisa Oz. Experts expose the serious threats to your health and how corporations like Monsanto hide the evidence. Never before seen evidence points to genetically engineered foods as a major contributor to rising disease rates in the US population, especially among children. Gastrointestinal disorders, allergies, inflammatory diseases, and infertility are just some of the problems implicated in humans, pets, livestock, and lab animals that eat genetically modified soybeans and corn. Monsanto's strong arm tactics, the FDA's fraudulent policies and how the USDA ignores a growing health emergency are also laid bare. This sometimes shocking film may change your diet, help you protect your family, and accelerate the consumer tipping point against genetically modified organisms (GMOs)."
"BREAKING NEWS": We just learned that Dodhi Williams, director of GMOfreeMaryland, who is an associate of Jeff Smith, the director of Genetic Roulette, has volunteered to come and introduce the film for us and to do a question and answer session afterwards. This is a great opportunity for us to not only see the film but to hear from someone closely involved in the field.

Support Stronger Toxic Chemicals Standards
Are you concerned that our country's toxic chemicals law is so inadequate that many common household products such as canned food linings, baby bottles, computer screens and carpeting could expose us and our families to potentially dangerous toxic chemicals? According to the Environmental Defense Action Fund, "Every American alive today has hundreds of hazardous chemicals flowing through our bodies."
We can help reverse this by writing to our Senators, urging them to support major reform on our Toxic Substances Control Act. In particular, we need new legislation to ensure that chemicals are safe before they are released to the public in everyday consumer products. For a model letter or to send a message online to your Senator, click here.

A Great Summer Ritual:
The Power of Play
 | Children playing on a beach, Marshall Islands
|
Why do we play? The answer turns out to be more profound than we might think. Through play we learn to relate to and bond with others, our imagination is cultivated, we learn flexibility and perseverance, our brain develops, we become smarter, we develop motor skills, optimism and the ability to cope with stressful situations. We become integrated with others and with the world. Play is not an indulgence but a necessity originating deep within our evolutionary biology.
