The quintessence of [Jesus'] life, as depicted in the gospels, is best seen in his death. Jesus is not pictured as grasping at life or seeking to extend it another minute; rather, as his life is draining away, he is still portrayed as giving life and love to others. As he dies, he is pictured as speaking a word of forgiveness to the soldiers (Luke 23:34), a word of hope to the penitent thief (Luke 23:43) and words of consolation to a grieving mother (John 19:25-27). It matters not whether these are the descriptions of an event that happened in human history; they are certainly the corporate memory of a life that no longer installed survival as its highest value. Jesus was bearing witness to a life power present in him that death could not overcome. Those who do not know how to live cling to life with a desperation born out of fear, but those who possess life are free to lay it down because death no longer has dominion over them. That is what people saw in Jesus.

Women's Spirituality Group Meeting April 2nd
We are meeting at 7 pm every other Tuesday at Kathy Baker's home in Edgewater. Our focus is on ways of connecting to the divine. Each meeting, several topics about spirituality and women are discussed, and a different form of meditation is shared in order to learn about it and try it out.
At our last meeting we discussed how music can be a point of encounter with the divine, and we listened to a Taize chant. Click on the link below and you can listen to this chant. Once you've connected, just scroll down to "Popular Posts" on the right sidebar and click on "Lord, Hear My Prayer." You might also want to listen to "Ubi Caritas," which is very familiar to our spiritual community. You may want to view the images while listening, or you may just close your eyes and let the music and words penetrate into you. http://cantusmundi.blogspot.com/2010/03/o-lord-hear-my-prayer-taize.html-120k
If you would like to join the group, please email Kathy Baker at k3b@comcast.net. |

A Message to all Companions from Erine
On March 26, 2013, Erine Sedicum wrote:
Dearest Companions,
If you would have told me that my life would be as messy as it is today, I would not be surprised. I'm use to messy...messy seems to be the order of the day. What surprises me is that despite the messy stuff, I'm happy within. Last week should have broke me, but here I am with the strength to continue and fight on. Between the letting go of a friend, an auto accident and car repair and other stuff, I was at a breaking point. Somewhere and someway this community has wormed it's way into my being. I'm grateful for this...beyond words.
I just wanted to thank you for believing in me more than I believe in myself. I can't wait to hear you challenge me, because with each challenge I'm reminded that family isn't DNA, by marriage, or by common bonds. Family is the connection to your complete being when things are beautiful plus by all appears perfect and downright sticky, messy, and smelly. Thank you, Companions as I couldn't ask for any family greater than this...I love you!!!
Love Always,
Erine

ALL ARE WELCOME TO
EVOLVE CHESAPEAKE BOOK GROUP
We are reading Eat Pray Love by Elizabeth Gilbert, and will meet on April 13th from 10 - 11:30 am at Barnes and Noble Cafe, Harbor Place. This is a lively group and there is still time to join. Our focus will be on the "pray" section in India (beads 37 to 72 of the japa mala.) Books are readily available if you need a copy. Contact Pastor Wayne at SchwandtW@aol.com.
Here's a sample from part of a poem by Gilbert from this section:
All this talk of nectar and bliss is starting to piss me off. I don't know about you, my friend, but my path to God ain't no sweet waft of incense. It's a cat set loose in a pigeon pen, and I'm the cat--but also them who yell like hell when they get pinned.

|
If you answered "no" to one or both of those questions, you are missing out on donations to help fund our ministry. Talk with Pastor Wayne if you need technical assistance understanding how to do these passive donation options for YOUR community.
Other Ways to Support our Ministry:
Books for sale at our Welcome Table
Titles by Matthew Fox, John Shelby Spong, Marcus Borg, etc. Note cards for sale with beautiful photography by Rick Dove.
Also, your used cell phones and empty ink jet and toner cartridges can also help fund our ministry. These items fit nicely in the offering basket along with remembrance of time and talent you have offered to our ministries and your financial gifts. Bring them to Gathering with you.
