This past Wednesday, many people gathered in the Trinity Chapel over the course of the day for our Ash Wednesday liturgies, marking Lent's arrival.  This Sunday is, of course, the First Sunday in Lent, and we mark that Sunday with the Great Litany at 8:00 am and 10:00 am.   Our 5:05 pm service this Sunday will be a Lenten Taizé service.  Lent is a season that calls us all to go a little deeper, and take time to reflect on the shape of our lives in Christ.  We'll begin that reflection this Sunday as we take up the story of Jesus' time in the desert following his baptism.

Godly Play and Explorers will be meeting this Sunday as usual, but there is NO Singing Saints or acolyte training.  Because this Sunday also falls on Presidents' Day weekend, which marks the beginning of "Ski Week" for many of our families with children in the local school systems, there will be NO youth group this Sunday evening.

Our Lenten program this year will begin next Sunday, February 21, and is designed for easy accessibility for people of all ages.   On the last two Sundays in February and the first two Sundays in March, we will gather for a brief lunch after the 10:00 am service followed by a choice of two programs for adults and one for children.   You can learn more about it on the website's Lent and Holy Week page, which you can access here.

Ash Wednesday's liturgy includes a solemn call to the "observance of a holy Lent".  I reiterate that invitation here, with the hope that this season will help you to sense the movement of God in your life, and prepare you to celebrate God's forgiveness, generosity, and compassion when the joy of Easter dawns in five weeks' time.

Peace,
MatthewSignatureGenuine

OWLS Luncheon Friday Feb. 12
Noon, Angus Hall

Please join us on Friday, February 12 at noon for an opportunity to hear fellow parishioner Jack Trollman talk about special work he did helping install Christian radio stations in the small country of Estonia after the Communists left. It will be a very interesting presentation for us, and one that will give us insight into a remarkable time in former Soviet history.

Please contact Alecia in the office to let us know if you plan to join us. Lunch is always provided for attendees, so plan to join OWLS on this date!
Lenten Sunday Lunches & Programs
It Starts Early This Year!

On the last four Sundays in Lent -- February 21, February 28, March 6, and March 13 -- we will be offering our Lenten Program after the 10:00 am Sunday service.  It will begin with lunch in Trinity Hall at 11:15 am, and our programs will begin at 11:35 am.  We will finish between 12:30 and 12:45.  There will be three offerings:
  • Being Mortal with Rev. Elizabeth
  • Growing a Rule of Life with Rev. Matthew
  • Exploring Communion for Children with Rev. Mary

This last offering will be for kids in kindergarten through 5th grade.  Youth are invited and encouraged to participate in one of the other offerings.  Child care will be provided for little ones.

More information for each class and our Lent and Holy Week information is available on our website here.  We hope that this will be a great way to engage everyone at every stage of life in the deeper reflection that we are called to in the season of Lent.

Supper & Lunch Clubs

What is a Supper Club Group? These are 7-9 Trinity adults who meet for a potluck dinner usually four times over a six month period. These groups are a wonderful way to get to know others in the church and they have been a Trinity tradition for years. What is a Lunch Club Group? Same idea as the supper group, but the groups will meet for lunch. (We are trying something new.) Groups meet in each others homes or at a restaurant. If meeting at a restaurant, everyone pays for their own meal. After you sign up, your group captain will schedule the first meeting. After that, the organizing responsibilities are divided among the members.

If you are interested in joining fill out the registration form here or contact Lynne Bramlett.
Women's Retreat Registration Open

Women of Trinity are invited to the Spring Women's Retreat at San Damiano Retreat Center in Danville. This year's retreat is "Spiritual Stories" where we will be exploring our own spiritual autobiographies and the stories and events that shape our spiritual lives. Registration is available online here. If you have questions please contact Rev. Elizabeth.

Help the Refugees
donations accepted now through March 6

The exploding refugee crisis in the Middle East and Europe has caught world wide attention. There are many ways to respond to the needs of the refugees, from sending donations to the front lines in Greece to supporting the resettlement of refugees in the US. It can feel overwhelming!

But there is a very tangible way to send your love and show your support. Walking shoes for men are desperately needed as their shoes are sopping wet when they arrive on the Greek shore.

Rev. Frannie Hall Kieschnick and Rhonda Smith will go to Lesvos, Greece on March 13 bringing your love and prayers in duffel bags of men's shoes brought with them. They say that we have more compassion when we walk a mile in the shoes of others. Well with these donations, we will show compassion by providing the shoes!

There are several things you can do:
  • Donate walking shoes with socks with the size written on the inside of the tongue.
  • Or donate money to help Rev. Frannie and Rhonda purchase more supplies to take with them on their journey.

The Outreach Commission will be matching up to $2500 of donations - please join us in helping the refugees!
Questions? Email Rev. Frannie.

Episcopal Charities Meeting at Trinity
Tuesday, March 1, 7-8:30 p.m

Join Episcopal Charities and fellow church and community members at the first of two Peninsula Action Network meetings in 2016, that will take place here at Trinity. You will help decide which local nonprofit will receive Episcopal Charities' three-year grant funding and mentorship. Bring your ideas of projects in the Peninsula Deanery that address root causes of poverty in the areas of healthcare, education, and the environment. Last year, Coastside Hope was chosen as an Episcopal Charities grant recipient with the help of the Peninsula Action Network. To learn more about Episcopal Charities, visit episcopalcharities.org or contact Kathleen Piraino

Easter Memorials
due March 13

There are opportunities every Sunday for people to make contributions for flowers and/or music to honor God and give thanks for all sorts of occasions (births, anniversaries or birthdays, memorials to loved ones who have died) or to honor a particular group of folks (the clergy and staff, the Family Ministries Commission, the Altar Guild, etc.). At Easter and Christmas, with all the special music and floral decorations, many such memorials can be made by many different people to celebrate the event and help defray the extra cost of the celebrations. If you wish to honor God and give thanks for any special persons or events this Christmas, we encourage you to do so.  The form for Easter Memorials can by found in the News and Announcements on Sunday mornings or downloaded here.
