This past month I was lucky enough to spend eight days with an amazing group of people who came to Sedona for the Intensive portion of the McLean Meditation Teacher Academy.
Each one left ready and eager to help others experience the many benefits of meditation by teaching meditation and mindfulness in their communities. There are over 100 MMI Certified Meditation & Mindfulness Teachers in the world.....find a teacher near you here!
One important rule I have during the training is this: Be kind to yourself, no matter what. It's a simple rule, but so easy to forget as we can easily slip into the habit of berating ourselves when we don't feel as if we're good
enough. We are all doing the best we can. So why not treat ourselves as we would a good friend? It's a very important practice.
This next month I'll be in California at the Chopra Center at a powerful workshop, Spiritual Solutions, and then I'll head to Ireland on a speaking tour.
Please do visit my website to learn more about the powerful meditation and mindfulness programs planned this year. There are lots of resources to support you in your meditation practice on the website, too! Let's meditate together soon!

Affirming Your Perfection
Becoming aware of how you care - or don't care - for your body, mind, and soul is the first step on the path to self-love. And meditation can help. When your mind quiets, you can see things more clearly. You notice your internal monologue, and those habits of ignoring yourself or disliking some aspect of yourself are uncovered. With awareness and the intention to adopt a kinder, authentic, and more loving and compassionate attitude toward yourself, you can become transformed.
As you go throughout your day, you can turn your attention to your internal dialogue. How do you treat yourself? Notice what you say to yourself when you catch your reflection in the mirror. If you find you are not being self-compassionate, you can offset negative self-talk with affirmations. Practice saying the affirmations below (or any you like) silently or aloud to yourself as you gaze into your own eyes in a mirror:
I am free, beautiful, and wise.
I am lovable just the way I am.
I will never leave you.
I love you.
I am kind, loving, and present.
Life loves me.
God live in me as me.
If you feel discomfort as you say some of these to yourself, stay with the sensations and continue the practice until you are fully able to experience loving yourself. You may find that some emotion arises, and when you simply bear witness, that emotion is released in the process. Explore what gets in the way of loving yourself.

Ask Sarah
I've been meditating for a year and a half now and when I start out I just see black when my eyes are closed. After a short while, I start to see colors swirling. The predominant colors are violet and green. On occasion, I will see smatterings of other colors as well. Do these colors mean anything? ~ Paula
As the mind settles down and the body settles down, purification and integration occur. This is how meditation creates a mind/body balance, by getting rid of the stress which gets in the way of a perfectly functioning system. Stress release is a natural benefit of meditation.
There are at least three indications that stress is being dissolved or released in meditation: 1. Movement of the Mind, 2. Movement of Emotions, and 3. Movement in the Body.
The movement of the mind in meditation, whether indicated by visual or verbally constructed thoughts, is an indication that stress is being dissolved or released. Mental activity can be visual such as seeing lights, colors, faces, images, scenes, etc. Other times you can have a creative idea, or your imagination kicks in, or you work on an endless to-do list. We certainly like some thoughts better than others, but rather than encouraging them, it's best to return your attention back to the focus of your meditation.
Thoughts in meditation are often about ordinary, current experiences, and are usually quickly forgotten after meditation. It's good to know that if they thought is really important, it will usually be there after the meditation period. It's also important to note that In meditation, the content of the thoughts in meditation often does not relate to the content of the stress being released. For instance, you could be thinking about lunch, but you're releasing stress from another experience.
Some people love all of this mental activity and turn their meditation period into a contemplation period. However, for optimum results, it's suggested not to try to make anything (thoughts, etc.) happen in meditation, and not to investigate or analyze why you are having the thoughts. You can do that when you are not meditating!
Now there are some people who equate colors with subtle energy centers in the body, energy centers called chakras. A chakra, which means wheel in Sanskrit, is a non-physical junction point where energy meets matter (chakras are often related to the major endocrine glands such as adrenals, testes and ovaries, pancreas, thymus, thyroid, pituitary, and pineal glands.) Some say that each chakra has a color associated with it too. So, colors in meditation can often indicate a release of stress related to the chakra that it represents, thus allowing for a freer spinning chakra and more life energy. If you would like to read about the colors, visit this link I found online.
There is, for every meditator, a choice point. A moment when you notice thoughts, emotions, or sensations distracting you in meditation. At that time you have a choice to return to the meditation practice, or to let the thoughts hijack your attention. It's up to you. And it can happen more than once in a meditation for sure! It's important not to spend time analyzing why this or that is happening; instead, acknowledge you are distracted, and simply, without judgment, refocus on the meditation practice. This is how meditation trains your brain. Don't stop meditating just because you are distracted by thoughts; instead, stay with the practice to allow the stress to be eliminated.
And, here's a great suggestion attributed to Siddhartha Gautama, aka Buddha (500 BCE). Believe nothing, no matter where you read it or who say it, unless it agrees with your own reason and common sense. Always good advice.
