I love to teach meditation! I love the sense of peace people express when the open their eyes after the very first time they've meditated!
At the teacher certification training, I explain to new teachers that teaching meditation is like being an usher. We usher people into the peace and presence that is everyone's birthright. It's truly natural to be able to center yourself, relax your body, and have a clear mind. When you make meditation a practice, you can make peacefulness and contentment your "new normal."
Do email me your questions about meditation at info@McLeanMeditation.com--and put "Ask Sarah" in the subject line. I look forward to hearing from you and supporting your practice.
With peace and love,
Sarah McLean, Executive Director

The Five Essentials of Meditation
1. It's okay to have thoughts during meditation, it's the nature of the mind to think
2. Don't try too hard, it's a barrier to the natural settling down in meditation
3. Let go of expectations, they'll limit your possibilities
4. Be kind to yourself, the way you treat yourself in meditation is the way you treat yourself as you live your life, and
5. Stick with it, don't stop because you don't think anything is happening, or you suddenly have a thought of something you simply must do. It's important to know this - the experiences you have in meditation have no bearing on whether or not your meditations are "working."
1. It's Okay to Have Thoughts
If you're thinking, I probably can't meditate because I have too many thoughts, then you are not alone. Perhaps you've already tried to meditate for a few minutes once or twice, and it "didn't work." (Read more about the essentials of meditation).

When you are soul-centered, you are not dependent on other people or external factors for your sense of self or for your own self-worth. Instead, you begin to depend on an inner reference point to identify yourself: your soul.
When you are soul-centered you are your own navigator. You trust yourself and feel safe and confident wherever you go and whatever you do, no matter whom approves of you, who doesn't, no matter what anyone thinks about you, or what they say you should or shouldn't do.
You can focus your attention where and when you want to, easily, without distraction. You have a receptive awareness and your natural state is relaxed, calm, peaceful, and loving toward yourself and others. You are open to all possibilities and approach life courageously and fearlessly, without aversion or clinging; without offensiveness or defensiveness.
When you are soul-centered, your attention is in the present moment, receiving the moment, welcoming it, and accepting things as they are. You don't struggle against what is happening now. You become aware of a spacious quality in the present moment in which you can listen to your inner wisdom, make nourishing choices, feel your feelings fully, and respond rather than react to the world. You have a deep inner wisdom and knowingness, make decisions easily, and are confident as you journey on your own path.

 Ask Sarah
"If you could provide only one piece of advice for people beginning or trying meditation, what would it be?" - Cori
It's okay to have thoughts in meditation. Many people are frustrated that when they try to meditate, because they can't stop thinking. The truth is - you can't stop your thoughts by trying to stop thinking. It's the nature of the mind is to think, just as the nature of your eye is to see.
Meditation is a practice where you train your attention. As you practice regularly, the mind will naturally settle down and you experience the silence that underlies the activity of thoughts and emotions that constantly bubble up. You don't need to completely stop thinking during meditation. Instead, you interrupt your constant flow of thoughts with a silent sound, or mantra, or by focusing on a sensation. Keep coming back to the focus of your meditation when you notice your attention has drifted to something else, and eventually , your mind and body will naturally settle down.
The stillness of the mind is revealed through meditating. This becomes your new normal. Over time, you'll be aware of this clarity and stillness even when the mind keeps going and you are engaged in activity.
If you're new to meditation or are looking for tips to enhance your meditation practice, send your questions about meditation to me at info@McLeanMeditation.com. Put "Ask Sarah" in the subject line. I'll answer you privately and perhaps your question will be featured in an upcoming issue.
