I am truly grateful for you and your dedication to make the best out of your life and the most of your time on earth.
What if I told you there was something you could do a few minutes each day to be happier, less stressed, more inspired, make better progress toward reaching your goals, be more kind, feel less lonely, sleep better, feel more optimistic, be healthier, and be more likeable, would you do it?
You probably think I am going to say you can achieve all this by practicing meditation? And you probably could, but I am suggesting the practices of gratitude.
Studies show that a regular gratitude practice (like keeping a daily or weekly gratitude journal) boosts happiness. Research that compared people who were asked to count blessings with people asked to count hassles and annoyances found that the gratitude groups were around 25% happier.
Are you grateful? You can cultivate an attitude of gratitude. Every moment offers an opportunity for thanks. And every "thank-you" can return you to the present moment (another way to become present to what is REALLY going on.)
Experience an overall shift to a more benevolent view of the world and see each moment as a gift (read more about cultivating gratitude here.)
With love,
Sarah McLean, Director McLean Meditation Institute in Sedona, Arizona

P.S. Maybe you can join me at one of the upcoming retreats at an historic abbey in Oxford England, or at the Earthfire Institute in Idaho (a terrific wildlife sanctuary). I'll also be leading some transformational retreats at some terrific resorts in Arizona. Let's meditate and be grateful together! Check out the schedule here.

Appreciating Your Life
"I am grateful for my life!" "I appreciate being alive." You can sincerely say these words to yourself a few times. Feel the feelings they evoke.
When you feel truly grateful for a person, an experience, and your own life, you experience a true communion.
When you live with gratitude, your mind is more clear, you deepen your relationship to the universe and its creator, and you include more of life as your awareness expands. Gratitude helps you to direct your focus to the good things in life.
There's science that backs this up. According to research on gratitude, grateful people have lower levels of stress and depression; they experience more vitality, increased optimism, and have higher levels of positive emotions. They have a greater capacity for empathy and are viewed as more generous and more helpful by others.
People who appreciate their lives are awake to the interconnectedness of their life with those of others, and this awakens an increased sense of responsibility and commitment to others. Also, grateful people place less importance on their own material wealth and are less likely to judge others based on what they have. They are also more likely to share what they have with others who don't have as much. In general, they are more satisfied with life. Sound good?

This is an exercises in receptivity. It's a great practice in cultivating the habit of being open to receive.
This week, go for a walk in a wonderful world. Whether you walk in the wilderness of Sedona or in a grocery store parking lot, this practice can be very effective to awaken you to the wonder and beauty of life.
Relax your body, give yourself some deep breaths. Stand where you are and gather yourself before you begin your walking meditation. As you do, anchor your awareness by appreciating your body and its stillness. Become aware of the sensation as your feet meet the ground. Allow yourself a moment of gratitude for all that the earth offers you to support your body and nourishes your life .
Begin to walk without a destination. As you walk, do so mindfully, allowing yourself to simply receive every sensation and experience, sense by sense, without judgement.
Hear the sounds that meet your ears, feel the sensations, see the beauty, smell the scents. Nature is aware of you. The trees, the birds, the sky, they are all conscious of your presence and welcome you.
Receive the breeze as it slips past your skin, receive the solidity of the ground as it meets each step, enjoy the fragrance that is offered, and feel the sun's warmth, or the coolness of shadows. See the sky's offerings of its clouds, sun, and vast blueness, and welcome the sounds as the birds serenade you.
Everything is for you to receive. If you walk with a quest or a longing in your heart, nature is wise and offers you an answer, a lesson, or a gift in response. Practice receiving all that meets you. Walking in this way will help you to cultivate the experience that you are living in a friendly world.

Creative Soul: A Writing Retreat
for Women
Earthfire Institute
Teton Valley, ID
June 27-29
Be part of a very special women's retreat at Earthfire Institute, a 40-acre wildlife sanctuary located just west of Grand Teton National Park: The Creative Soul Writing Retreat for women. You don't have to be especially artistic, poetic, or clear; you simply need this: a desire to write and delve into self-awareness, even if only for a weekend.
For many, writing is a spiritual practice which leads to a profound experience of timelessness. A single moment of inspiration can become an eternity. The same is true of meditation. For those who practice meditation, life can be transformed physically, spiritually, and emotionally. If you've never meditated or if you are a seasoned meditator, this retreat could be for you. Meditation allows the veil of stress to lift so you can connect with your true nature and commune with your creative soul and write from there.
Sarah McLean will be joined by the founder of Earthfire, Dr. Susan Eirich, who dedicates her life to creating a new model of relating to nature through the voices of the rescued wildlife under her care. A substantial donation will be made to the Institute on behalf of each woman who attends.
