There is a life-force within your soul, seek that life.
There is a gem in the mountain of your body, seek that mine.
O traveler, if you are in search of That, don't look outside,
look inside yourself and seek That.
This aloneness is worth more
than a thousand lives.
This freedom is worth more
than all the lands on earth.
To be one with the truth
for just a moment, is worth more than the world and life itself.
~ Rumi
13th-century Persian poet and Sufi mystic

It's so beautiful in Sedona this time of year. I am so blessed to wake up every day to the beauty of mother earth, her majestic mountains that surround us with love and presence, the hauntingly beautiful blue sky, and the everpresent luminous light of the sun that nourishes us all. Meditation helps anyone wake up to the miracle of this creation. I am so grateful.
Do you say what you mean, are you present in your communication? This issue is about communication: the communion between you and I, between you and those in your life, between you and all that surrounds you. You'll find an excerpt from Week 6 of my book, Soul-Centered: Transform Your Life in 8 Weeks with Meditation and two articles: "Can You Hear Me Now?" and "Listening With Love."
You'll also see there are some great events going on in Sedona. On May 9 & 10, I'm speaking at Woman Arising, a dynamic and empowering boutique women's conference. At the end of the month I am truly excited to be presenting at Summoning the Sacred with Deepak Chopra and Jean Houston, and I'll be leading a meditation for the opening night of the inaugural spiritual film festival in Sedona, the Illuminate Film Festival.
I would love to meditate with you someday soon. Maybe you can join us at one of the summer's retreats at Esalen in Big Sur, California, or at the Earthfire Institute in Teton Valley, Idaho. Or, in the fall in Oxford, England. Visit my web site for details.
With love,
Sarah McLean, Director McLean Meditation Institute in Sedona, Arizona

Authenticity: Communicating Honestly
"Happiness is when what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony." Mohandas Gandhi
In this sixth week of learning to transform your life with meditation, the focus is on navigating your life using your internal guidance system. You will discover the value of paying attention to your own wisdom, responding with integrity to opportunities that present themselves, and exploring the value of your attention while in communication with others.
You will learn that as you practice meditation, as you become more sensitive and settled, you can access more spaciousness. Instead of reacting habitually to people, circumstances, and stimulus in general, you will naturally have access to more creative responses. For instance, when the phone rings, instead of picking up right away, you become aware of a moment when you can choose something else. You give yourself a deep breath, or you wish the person well on the other end, even before you know who it is. This kind of creative response is available anytime, and it can help you to change your perspective. There are other ways to change up the reactive mind: you could decide to park your car in a different place at work, or you could enter the building through a different doorway. Or you could find yourself in the middle of an argument and feel yourself tense up, but instead of defending your position, you choose a new response. "You might be right," you hear yourself saying to your spouse or your coworker. Your body relaxes and the impulse to get defensive becomes less present. These are tiny changes, but each one illustrates that in any given moment you can choose do just about anything.

Can You Hear Me Now?
Listening to nature, listening to each other, listening to yourself, and listening to your own wisdom may be rarer than it seems.
Recently, a friend asked me to come to California to watch her perform in a show. Unfortunately, the performance was scheduled for a weekend that I'd made another important commitment that I didn't feel I could break. She got pretty upset when I told her that I wouldn't be there and why. She had the belief that because I chose to keep the previous commitment, it meant that I didn't care enough for her and her work. I realized she could've avoided the pain if she had simply listened literally to what I was saying. I began to notice how I and others listen to each other. Or rather, don't listen to each other. Sometimes when people seem like they're listening, they're actually doing something else while you are talking. They could be... ( read more about what keeps us from listening here).

Listening with Love: A Practice for Kinder Communication
Below is a listening practice to be more present and mindful while engaged in a conversation. It's a great way to become clear about listening.
Next time you are engaged in a conversation, while you listen to another person, take a brief moment on purpose to turn your attention toward yourself. Get to know what kind of listener you are.
Notice your body. Notice if you're facing the person heart to heart. Notice if your arms are crossed, and if they are, uncross them. Relax your body, and notice any habitual body movements, language, or sensations that arise.
Notice your mind. Notice your tendency to drift off, mind read, distract yourself, or imagine what they are going to say next. Notice if you have an initial judgment or interpretation, or you label what they are saying as this or that, or dismiss it totally. Perhaps you are waiting to hear what you expect to hear, or what you are afraid of hearing, rather than simply listening to what the person is saying.
Notice your emotions. Notice if you feel anxious or bored, or you have an impulse to interrupt them or jump in when they take a breath or get their next thought together. Keep your attention in the present moment, to what they are saying while they are saying it, and what you are feeling while you are feeling it.
Their words might trigger thoughts about the past or future.Be easy on yourself, but do notice these things and keep returning your full focus to the person speaking. You can drop your awareness into your heart-center and listen from there.Simply receive the communication. Be sweet to yourself and completely present for them.
Each time, when you notice you aren't present with them, come back and give them your full attention once again. If they pause between thoughts, let yourself explore the silence. Find comfort with it. There is nothing you need to do or say, unless you are moved from the heart to speak. Try it! |

Creative Soul: A Writing Retreat
for Women
Earthfire Institute
Teton Valley, ID
June 27-29
Be part of a very special women's retreat at Earthfire Institute, a 40-acre wildlife sanctuary located just west of Grand Teton National Park: The Creative Soul Writing Retreat for women. It's a one-of-a-kind retreat that helps anyone access their true creativity. You don't have to be especially artistic, poetic, or clear; you simply need this: a desire to write and delve into self-awareness, even if only for a weekend.
For many, writing is a spiritual practice which leads to a profound experience of timelessness. A single moment of inspiration can become an eternity. The same is true of meditation. For those who practice meditation, life can be transformed physically, spiritually, and emotionally. If you've never meditated or if you are a seasoned meditator, this c could be for you. Meditation allows the veil of stress to lift so you can connect with your true nature and commune with your creative soul and write from there.
Sarah McLean will be joined by the founder of Earthfire, Dr. Susan Eirich, who dedicates her life to creating a new model of relating to nature through the voices of the rescued wildlife under her care.
