Being authentic is to be established in present moment awareness,
responding to life in real time by saying what you mean and meaning what you say.
It means making choices that are in alignment with your deepest vows. It requires being aware of who you are, and maintaining that awareness of your true nature
as well as seeing
the same in others.
Authenticity happens when you navigate life from your soul-center, and are compassionate
and powerful.
It's so freeing and peaceful
to live that way.

Happy New Year! Every moment is new though, isn't it!
In the past few issues we've been highlighting lessons from my book Soul-Centered: Transform Your Life in 8 Weeks with Meditation. This month we'll look at approaching life with a Beginner's Mind. A mind free from preconceived notions and ideas. It's so refreshing!
Speaking of refreshing, I've come up with some great new programs for you this year, from a Soul Radiance Retreat in an old abbey in Oxford, England to a woman's creativity retreat at the Earthfire Wildlife Sanctuary in Idaho. I'll also be working with Mii amo Spa to offer nourishing 5-day immersions, and offering a retreat at the new Awaken Center at Unity Village in Missouri.
I've also been invited to work with Deepak Chopra and Jean Houston at the Sommoning the Sacred retreat, and am part of the Sedona World Wisdom Days, and the Sedona Yoga Festival, and will be at Esalen again this year I am really excited as I write this. And hope you can join me, if not, check out the array of virtual events (see the links on the left) Visit my website for a full calendar.
Feel free to share this newsletter with your friends using the links on this page. There are free meditations and great opportunities to dive into self-awareness. Let's meditate together sometime very soon!

With love and peace,
Sarah McLean, Director McLean Meditation Institute

 Some Pretty Good Resolutions

Here are 25 resolutions that I aim to keep:
1. When you wake up each morning, imagine what you want to put your attention on for the day. What matters to you? What do you want to enliven in your life? It could be that you want to keep an eye (or an ear) out for beauty, or intuition, or you want to remember to love yourself, or to practice being a good listener, or be more mindful or to experience joy, or notice the way the universe communicates with you via synchronicity and coincidences. One thing's for sure, what you put your attention on is enlivened in your awareness. Decide what you want to focus on.
2. Slow down once and a while. Life is delicious, but you can miss it when you are racing around with your attention on accomplishing the next item on the to-do list. No matter what activity you are engaged in, whether eating, showering, talking, driving, exercising, walking, reading, working, or giving a gift, take your time, or rather give yourself the time to savor the moments. Don't rush or blow yourself and your emotions off. Give yourself the gift of the present. And receive. Read more here.

Approaching Life with a Beginners Mind
"Look at everything as though you were seeing it for the first time or last time. Then your time on earth will be filled with glory." Betty Smith, author of A Tree Grows in Brooklyn
A beginner's mind is a way of perceiving life with an open attitude. As you let go of ideas, judgments, and expectations, the simplest things appear as new and exciting-even if you've experienced them many times before.
I first learned about beginner's mind during my training at the Zen Center, but you don't have to be a Buddhist to have a beginner's mind. Siddhartha Gautama, also known as the Buddha, wasn't a Buddhist, either. Brought up Hindu, he renounced his religion and went looking for freedom from ideas and beliefs. He wanted to experience life directly and went on a quest for the beginner's mind.
The following Zen koan (wisdom story) illustrates of beginner's mind:
A Zen master received a university professor who was visiting the master's monastery to learn about Zen. The master served the professor tea. He poured his visitor's cup full, and then he kept on pouring. The professor watched the overflow until he could no longer restrain himself. "The cup is over-full! No more will go in!"
"Like this cup," the master said, "you are full of your own opinions and expectations. How can I show you Zen unless you first empty your cup?"
Many of us are like the visiting professor, searching for wisdom with a mind already full with expectations and judgments about what is right or wrong, true or untrue. It is overflowing with what we already know.
As you practice meditation with a welcoming, non-resistant, innocent attitude, it cultivates a beginners mind. It transforms your perspective both in and out of meditation, and your inner monologue of I know what that is, or, I know what's supposed to happen next, begins to quiet down. You let go of being an expert and walk through the world with fresh eyes openness, innocence and a child-like curiosity. You empty your cup, making room to receive life as it meets your senses.
Bonus!
"As a meditation novice, I experienced one of Sarah's guided meditations first hand at a recent seminar. The intense clarity and relaxation gained as a result inspired me to buy her CDs. Sarah's gift is divine and her audios are an essential companion for anyone wishing to enhance their life." -Bonnie, Scottsdale, AZ
