Leading in the Midst of Change
Nowhere is your leadership tested than when you are leading your team through change.
Your team members are looking to you to lead them and are depending upon you for information, support, and direction. Here are three ways you can navigate yourself and yourself through times of transition:
Exhibit Confidence You may not feel confident during times of uncertainty. In fact, you may feel just the opposite. But your team members are looking to you for this sense that "things will be all right." Avail yourself of the many resources that are around you to be able to feel confident. Seek counsel from your mentor. Talk with other managers. Solicit input from your team.
Be that Calm in the Storm What do we want to do when we feel out of control? We allow our emotions to go hay wire and this can wreck havoc on a team's performance. Strive to stay calm in the midst of chaos. Provide a safe place for people to vent but make sure your expectations and performance goals are clear.
Display a Positive Outlook Have you seen change initiatives fail because the leaders did not align themselves with the new vision? I've seen leaders sabotage the success of their own organizations by bad mouthing upper management or providing excuses for not implementing the new policy or organizational structure. Be a positive force for your team. They will "pick up" on your optimistic outlook and help you create a culture of success.
One change that tests your leadership acumen is during times of downsizing. Let's say you survived the latest lay offs. Don't think you are on easy street. There is such a thing as "survivor's syndrome" that you and the rest of your staff need to be aware of - Read "Managing the Survivors"
A Blessed Holiday Season to you and yours!
