Magic of Music!

The Magic of Music is our biggest fundraiser of the year and includes lots of music, silent and live auctions, dinner and dancing.  This will be the 10th annual, held on March 1, 2014.  Our first planning meeting will be Tuesday, October 1st at 7:30pm in the choir room.  We'll be done in time to watch the band's final run through.  If you've helped in the past, please join us again.  If the Magic of Music is new to you, please come check it out.  We have many jobs, big and small and won't make you commit to anything you don't want to do.

Contact  Sally Baker with questions.

Peter and the Star Catcher

"Peter and the Starcatcher", winner of 5 Tony Awards on Broadway,  is coming to the Curran Theater in San Francisco!  Amador Friends of Music is selling tickets for the first few rows of the balcony for only $60 a piece.  Our show is Wednesday, November 27th at 8pm.  It's the night before Thanksgiving, so bring your friends and family who are visiting for the holiday, it's only a short walk from the BART.  You cannot currently buy these tickets unless you have an SHN membership.  Thanks to the generosity of SHN in San Francisco, AFM can sell these tickets at below market value and make a healthy profit for music at Amador Valley High School!  This show is for all ages and is a theatrical marvel.  I saw it off Broadway and would be happy to see it over and over again.  It's based on the "Peter and the Starcatcher" books by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson, but having read these books is not a prerequisite for enjoying this show.  The story is a prequel to the story of Peter Pan.  It's called a "musical play", and while not a traditional musical, it does involve some singing and dancing. You will be amazed at the creativity and stagecraft of this unique show, so get your tickets now.  The best seats will be assigned on a first come, first served basis.  Click here to buy tickets.  There are a limited number of seats and the best go to the first to act.  Questions?  Contact Paul Unpingco.

  Go Dons!!!

Please note the earlier start time for practice on Saturday (9:00 am!) and please come on by at 5:00 pm for the family performance.  It is free and each band member will be allowed to have one family member down on the field with them to learn a little about the marching band experience first hand!

If you are able to help with the building of our cloud props for the show please come by the band room Saturday morning to help out! Many hands make light work and no skill is necessary to help build our 100 yard cloud landscape!
If you have any questions, as always please contact me.

Don't forget, the student band council will be selling pizza and beverages!

We look forward to seeing you on Saturday!

The band needs your help!

road warriors2 Specifically the Road Warriors (RWs), the team of parents who transport equipment to and from competition venues and help your students move band equipment on and off the field for each competition and home football game, need your help.  We do not have enough volunteers to get the band on the field.  If you can contribute some time to the success of the band, or have questions, please contact Mike Gould .

Being a Road Warrior:
  • Is FUN!  This is a great opportunity to see what happens behind the scenes and to feel the energy and excitement of the students as the get ready to perform...not to mention the enthusiasm and appreciation coming from the spectators.
  • This is the next best thing to putting on a purple uniform and marching on the field.
  • Does not require heavy lifting or special skills.  The students know what to do; you just need to help them get there.
  • Can be done by moms or dads...or both.
  • Does not mean you have to work at every competition or game (although many choose to so).
  • Is a great way to meet other band parents.
What does a Road Warrior do?

At home football games, assigned parents meet at the band room when 8 minutes remain on the game clock in the 2nd Quarter; you will help move "pit" or Front Ensemble equipment on and off the field for the half time performance...that's all!

At competitions, assigned parents will meet at the band "camp" 45-50 minutes before performance time and help move the "pit" to the stadium and onto the field...and then back to the camp after their performance; a commitment of less than 2 hours.  A smaller group of parents help to load and unload the truck and trailer at Amador and the competition site; there has never been a need to assign volunteers to help with loading.

Whether or not you can help move equipment, we also have a need for people to help maintain our support equipment such as lights, a generator (buy gas), check that tires are inflated, perform repairs, lubricate casters, etc...

Thank you for your consideration and help!
  News from RA Land!

Hey everyone!  Our schedule is starting to pick up momentum and competitions are right around the corner!

The one event that requires alittle more advance planning is, of course, Championships in Fresno, November 23-24.  Since we have to book hotels for those as well, we need to get the Bus/Event RA's lined up NOW.  (Hotel accommodations are available for our RA group at a cost of $99 each-incl breakfast).

We have provided the link for the Championships in this week's newsletter but starting next week, all events will be up on Charms.  Please check your schedules and if you're going to Championships anyways, consider signing up to ride the bus and join us.

As always, THANK YOU!

UNIFORMS

New Uniform

Help keep the band looking sharp!

Part of what the judges look for is the visual impression of the band on the field.  During marching season, parents can help maintain the look of the uniforms by making sure that:

(1) the pant crease is sharp

(2)there is no bend in the pant crease near the shoes

(3)the jacket is on a sturdy hanger (wood or plastic)

(4)the pants are washed between wearings

See uniform webpage for more information.

Thanks to the uniform inspection volunteers!  Rae Allen, Jackie Stewart, Eve Tieck and Kim Lounsbury.
