Horticultural Highlight: 
Cotinus coggygria, Smokebush

"Gone up in smoke" may actually be a positive occurrence when referring to Cotinus coggygria, Smokebush. These large, deciduous shrubs, growing up to 15-feet-tall, provide an unusual ornamental display, looking as if wreathed in a cloud of smoke. 

This curious appearing cloud of smoke is actually neither flower or fruit. The panicle on which spring flowers grew persists, and upon these stems, tiny hairs elongate, creating the unusual "smoke" of the smokebush. Some may also be reminded of cotton-candy... more

History Highlight: First Interment made at Mount Auburn Cemetery

On July 6, 1832 the first interment in Mount Auburn's original 72 acres was made near the top of Mount Auburn's peak (Lot 182 Mountain Avenue). James and Margaret Boyd buried their son Charles in their family lot. It was their third child lost in 10 years. In all, the Boyd family buried five children here.
