Wildlife Highlight: Red-breasted Nuthatch

There are two species of nuthatches that can be found at Mount Auburn, the White-breasted Nuthatch is one that actually could be found on every day of the year and the Red-breasted Nuthatch which is more of an irruptive species.

Highlights from the Significant Monument Collection

Mount Auburn is the first cemetery in the United States to receive a Museums for America Collections Stewardship grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) to document our significant monuments. Join Meg L. Winslow, Curator of Historical Collections, for a presentation in Story Chapel about our significant monument collection including highlights from this project. Followed by a walk to the recently conserved Magoun monument. FREE

Annual Fall Bulb Planting Event

Yes - believe it or not, it is that fun time again! Get your hands in the soil alongside our professional gardening staff during our annual fall bulb planting event. Bulbs planted in the Cemetery each fall add blooms to Mount Auburn's early spring season.
Bring your work gloves and trowel along with lots of energy and enthusiasm. Dress for garden work.

History Highlight: Signs placed at Corners of all Avenues and Paths
Orientation within the Cemetery has always been an important issue. Early engravings show the first signs as hand-painted planks mounted on rough posts. These were replaced by more elaborate signs, probably after mid-century. There are currently 500 path and avenue signs. In fiscal year 2015, 11 signs were restored as part of a 10 year cycle of care. Person of the Month:
Colonel Robert Gould Shaw
Robert Gould Shaw was born in Boston in October 1837 and later became a legendary Officer in the Union Army commanding the first all-black Regiment, the 54th MA, which entered the American Civil War in 1863.
Following his death in 1863, Shaw was buried at Fort Wagner in a mass grave with his regiment, he is however, commemorated at Mount Auburn. Read more about the monument memorializing Robert Gould Shaw here.
