Horticultural Highlight: Hosta

Our horticulture department's most recent plant inventory identifies 4700 trees and 4900 shrubs/dwarf trees growing throughout our living collection. Beneath and between this expansive greenery are pockets of shade where you will find a wide diversity of Hosta sp., Plantain lily growing.

Wildlife Highlight: The Solitary Sandpiper
When we think of sandpipers, we envision hundreds migrating in flocks along our shores, but here at Mount Auburn we can encounter two species, the Spotted Sandpiper and the Solitary Sandpiper, during their fall migration. Grant from Mass Humanities
The Friends of Mount Auburn is pleased to announce a $5,000 grant from Mass Humanities which will help support the creation of two films in artist-in-residence Roberto Mighty's earth.sky series. The new films will focus on notable Civil War era nurse Dorothea Dix and nineteenth-century animal rights activist George Thorndike Angell.

Person of the Month: Oliver Wendell Holmes (1809 - 1894)
Born in Cambridge on August 29, 1809, Dr. Oliver W. Holmes became an author, doctor and one of the leading voices of Boston culture. His amazing 1830 poem "Old Ironsides" led to the public support of keeping the USS Constitution from the scrap yard. He coined the word "anesthesia" as well as "Boston Brahmin" and nicknamed Boston the "Hub" of the solar system... learn more
