Mount Auburn's Civil War Heroes: 
Preserving Memory in Stone
 
Henry Todd (c. 1837 - 1864)
The Friends of Mount Auburn is delighted to announce that the Cemetery has received a matching grant of $5,000 from the Massachusetts Sesquicentennial Commission of the American Civil War towards a $10,000 project to preserve six Civil War-era monuments at the Cemetery. 
 
The monuments commemorate a flag bearer, nurse, chaplain, private, first lieutenant, and assistant adjunct general-individuals who were on the front lines as well as those in non-combatant positions who contributed in vital ways to the war effort... read more

Joyce Chen Monument
Person of the Month: 
Joyce Chen (1917 - 1994)

Restaurateur and cookbook author Joyce Chen was born in Beijing, China, on September 14, 1917.

Chen fled the Communist regime in 1949 with her husband, Thomas, and their small children. They settled in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where Chen taught Mandarin cooking first in her home, and then at adult education centers in Cambridge and Boston. Her friends encouraged her to open a restaurant, and in 1958, Chen opened New England's first Mandarin Chinese restaurant on Concord Avenue.

When people talk about the wildlife that benefit from Mount Auburn's sustainable initiatives, it is easy to focus on Mount Auburn's special place in the world of ornithology.

Mount Auburn Receives Preservation Award

We are delighted to announce that Mount Auburn was honored by the Victorian Society of America/New England Chapter (VSA/NE) at their Preservation Awards Ceremony at Mount Auburn on June 27,2013. 
 
In the letter to the Cemetery announcing the award, Chair of the VSA/NE Preservation Awards Commission Peggy Clarke applauded the Cemetery's preservation efforts noting that "Mount Auburn has had a monumental challenge throughout its history, with the care of both an important landscape as well as its monuments... read more
