Greetings!
Welcome to this newsletter from the icy tropics, otherwise known as Anchorage! SWAMC's 2013 Economic Summit and Annual Membership Meeting will be held February 20th - 22nd in downtown Anchorage. From now until the conference we will send occasional email updates regarding the agenda and speakers, meeting logistics, SWAMC business, and other important information related to the event.
The conference is shaping up to be quite informative and entertaining, so we hope you are making (or have made) all your arrangements to attend. Thanks for reading, and stay safe out there!

Register Now for SWAMC's 2013 Annual Economic Summit
Online registration for the 2013 SWAMC Conference is open and we hope you will join us at the Hotel Captain Cook in Anchorage in just a few short weeks. This year's conference will be special because 2013 marks SWAMC's 25th Anniversary. If you are wondering, time actually does fly. Once again, we are partnering with the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco on this year's conference. They assist us with registration, among other things, so if you click on the registration link you'll be taken to their page. Don't worry, you're in the right spot! You can see the full conference agenda here.
This may come as no surprise, but we are still seeking event sponsors. If you would like to support the 2013 Conference, you can do that online or just contact our office with questions and further details. We are happy to talk with you about opportunities to support the conference. Sponsorships not only help us defray some of the event costs, they more importantly demonstrate your commitment to economic development and regional progress in Southwest Alaska. This area has enormous potential for its residents and the state of Alaska, so we hope you will consider sponsoring this key event for the region. And at the very least, if you are reading this we hope you will attend!

Keynote Speaker DJ "Eagle Bear" Vanas
DJ "Eagle Bear" Vanas will deliver a Keynote Address to the conference on the morning of February 21. DJ is an internationally acclaimed motivational storyteller and leadership expert. He is also the author of the celebrated book "The Tiny Warrior: A Path to Personal Discovery & Achievement."
DJ is Odawa Indian from Michigan and uses traditional warrior concepts and wisdom to inspire others to achieve their best in life and career. For fifteen years, he's delivered his dynamic programs in 49 states and overseas to over 2,500 audiences including Walt Disney, NASA, IBM and hundreds of tribal governments, communities and schools. He's also been invited to the White House to speak - twice. After serving ten years as an Air Force officer, he is now the president of his own company, Native Discovery Inc. DJ's mission is to "build the warriors of tomorrow...today".
He knocked the socks off of everyone in the room in Unalaska last fall when he addressed the Aleutian Pribilof Islands Association's Regional Wellness Conference. We're confident DJ can deliver the same results to SWAMC's members when we see him on February 21st...you won't want to miss him!

Regional Energy Workshop Set for Wednesday, February 20th
A few good volunteers are working with SWAMC to develop an Energy Workshop in conjunction with the SWAMC Conference on February 20th. This workshop will also be at the Hotel Captain Cook in the downstairs level, from 10 AM - 4 PM.
The workshop will be divided into two parts for the day: Part One will break participants into three groups to discuss regional energy planning for the Aleutians/Pribilofs, Bristol Bay, and Kodiak sub-regions. We want to get SWAMC stakeholder feedback on what regional energy plans should include and potential outcomes and expectations. AEA will be on hand to give a presentation on what plans should look like. Part Two will feature several presentations regarding some of the major energy topics facing us today. These will include Energy Policy & Funding, Stranded Rural Resources, Cold Weather Housing, Energy Economics, PCE Legislation, and more. Topics are evolving so stay tuned for more. Keep in mind, this workshop is technically separate from the traditional two day conference held on the 21st and 22nd, but anyone registered for the Conference is welcome and highly encouraged to attend. |
Stay at the Hotel Captain Cook for $99/Night The 2013 Conference will be held as usual at the Hotel Captain Cook in downtown Anchorage. The hotel offers SWAMC guests an affordable rate of $99/night for the duration of the conference. Just use the code SWAMC13 in the group code section to receive the discount. Additionally, those who register for the conference and stay at the hotel receive a $30 discount off registration fees. What a deal! |
Interested in Having an Exhibitor Booth?
Exhibitor booths offer businesses large and small, governmental agencies, and other organizations a chance to "show their stuff" at the SWAMC Conference. Having a booth is a good marketing opportunity if your entity is offering new products or services, wants to become more familiar with Southwest communities, or if you just want to keep your name out in front of the region's constituents. If you are interested in having a booth, fill out this form and send to our office via email or fax to 888.356.1206. Just show up early on February 21st to set up, around 7.30 AM. Alternatively, you can always become a sponsor if you are looking for additional ways to market your company or organization to SWAMC's members. Contact our office for more details. |
