Westhampton church faces $10,000 fine

The Westhampton Congregational United Church of Christ is facing a $10,000 fine for being 100 days late with an elevator inspection, and so far the state has been unwilling to consider reducing or forgiving the penalty.

The church had the understanding that its elevator contractor would schedule and conduct the inspections when they were due. The elevator's safety certificate expired on Nov. 30, 2013, and - unnoticed by the church - the company did not schedule an appointment to inspect it until March 10, 2014.

A month later, the church received notice from the state that it owed a $10,000 fine for that lapse - 100 days times $100 a day.

The Parish Paper: Navigating the Currents of Endowments and Reserve Funds
Donations to religious nonprofits climbed to historic levels, exceeding 115 billion dollars in the past year. Yet that rising tide hides small and turbulent undercurrents. Namely, charitable giving for religious institutions as a percentage of all nonprofit contributions continues on a thirty-year downward slide. Because people give to many worthwhile causes, including the church, leaders must make a case for how the congregation's mission advances God's will.
